Children's Literature
Zoom into adventure with this unique book from the "Zoom" book series. Based on the premise of a lens zooming in to view something small, this book begins with an overall view of Jurassic earth and gradually scales down to offer a view of scaly, green dinosaur skin. A double spread contents page includes titles of each subject as well as a picture. This makes it easy to find precise information. However, the entire book is so enthralling you will want read all of it every time you pick it up. For added information, an excellent explanation of the "zoom" process is found at the book's beginning. Each page features a section that is physically cut away from the page corner. Because of this, you get a glimpse of what comes on the next page and what happened previously. This intriguing aspect lifts the interest level to a very high standard. Along the "zooming" path you will see not only the Jurassic earth, but also landscape, a swamp, dinosaurs in the swamp, a dinosaur attack, smaller dinosaurs, a nest with eggs, the inside of the dinosaur egg, and finally the dinosaur's skin. A special plus is the "Dinosaur Factfile" at the end of the book. Pages of text are cross-referenced with the factfile to enhance learning. A complete glossary and detailed index round out this well-structured, information-packed book. 2002, Black Birch Press/The Gale Group,

Each page of this extremely informative book is divided into three horizontal picture sections that turn independently of one another. The top section features dinosaurs that inhabited the skies. The middle section features dinosaurs and early reptiles that roamed over the land. And the lowest section features aquatic dinosaurs. Each section is accompanied by brief, yet detailed explanatory text. With this set-up, young dinophiles can not only learn about these extinct beasts and their habitats; but they can also create their own little images of prehistory. It's part of the "Nature Company EcoXplorer" series.

Gr 4-6-Both of these books have clear and inviting color illustrations and brief bits of explanatory text. Scooped-out corners of the sturdy pages assist the step-by-step process of "zooming in" on details, as if with a camera. Dinosaurs begins by approaching Jurassic Earth from outer space, focusing in, in turn, on a general landscape; a swamp; its saurian denizens; and then, more tightly, on large and small dinosaurs, a dinosaur nest, the interior of an egg, and the embryo's skin. Pages on dinosaur origins, families, and extinction follow. The concept of the series works better in Human Body, which looks inward from the form of a sleeping child to the makeup of a DNA molecule, with stops along the way at the skin, hair, capillaries, blood, individual cells, and chromosomes. A final section provides diagrams of and more detailed information on the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. These titles might plump up a bibliography, but they would probably find more use in browsing collections or as gifts from Grandma.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
