Lucius Cassius Dio Cocceianus (c. 155 or 163/4 - after 229 AD) was a Roman official and historian. A Roman citizen of Greek descent, Dio was born at Nicaea (now Iznik, Turkey) in Asia Minor. After a career of public service, serving as consul, senator, and a governor, Dio spent his later years (c. 207-229) writing his history of Rome.
