Children's Literature - Jeanne K. PettenatiThe concept behind this book is good-teaching children about direction. However, the design and execution of the message falls short of the book's promise. Children accompany Ed Mouse to his friend Jo's birthday party. In doing so they learn some words about direction-left, right, across, under, middle, etc. On each page spread, there are questions about the illustrations. The questions would be more effective , however, if they were integral to the story. In addition, some of the questions are confusing. For example, when readers are asked what is in front of a cake, the illustration shows things to its right and left, but nothing directly in front of it. Notes at the back included for parents and teachers give some positive suggestions for directional games. One of several books in the "Ed Mouse Finds Out About ..." series.
