Editorial Reviews

Soap operas are the highly popular cash cows of the three major networks. More than 400 stars are profiled in this who's who. The entries, arranged alphabetically by the name of the actor or actress, include both long-established artists and current child stars. All entries are of living persons, but not all are currently working in daytime drama Most profiles include a black-and-white studio photograph. Basic opening facts encompass birthday (but usually not the year) and place, marital status, appearance, education, interests, awards, and daytime roles. The conversational narratives range from 200 to 750 words and cover the artists' personal lives, daytime and nightime television roles, movies, and theater work. The sketches include a wide array of trivia; even Elaine Princi's infomercial for a 900-number psychic line is included. Sometimes the length devoted to an individual is misleading. Janine Turner of "Northern Exposure", who spent one year on the soaps, has a longer profile than Genie Francis of Luke and Laura fame. The book includes lists of addresses for the networks and for fan clubs. A name index, which also lists the individual's daytime shows, concludes the volume Two other books profile soap stars, but both are 1985 imprints and include less than three dozen entries. Compared with the most recent editions of "Who's Who in Entertainment" and the "Television Almanac", this new book covers many more popular stars not included in the other titles. The "Who's Who" volume, for the stars included, did a better job of listing facts, such as year of birth and divorce information. Public libraries serving fans of daytime television may want to consider adding "The Soap Opera Book" to their collections.

It's in the issuers' interest to keep cardholders confused and in debt; this directory includes an introduction with steps cardholders can take to protect themselves, locate better-priced cards, and calculate the true cost of credit cards.
