Editorial Reviews

Zom Zoms
In 1991, when the "Directory of Military Bases in the U.S." made its debut, it was described as the most complete guide available on the topic. Four years later, the same can be said about the greatly enlarged and appropriately renamed second edition. The title says it all--"Directory of U.S. Military Bases Worldwide". While the format remains unchanged, the 700-plus listings have been expanded to more than 1,100 listings of active military bases and installations within the continental U.S. and abroad. Military branches now include the National Guard, the reserves, Joint Services Installations, Department of Defense Agencies, military camps, stations, recruiting offices, and command headquarters. All information was supplied by the installations themselves in the form of printed information (pamphlets, surveys). As expected, domestic sites comprise the bulk of the directory's main sections. Arrangement is alphabetical--by state, city, and name. All branches of the armed forces are interfiled, as in the first edition. The most important addition to each affected entry is information on anticipated and future base closings. This information had been only in the appendix of the first edition. The second edition also includes two appendixes that pertain to the closures and realignments outlined in the 1993 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission report and the July_ 1994 report update. There are indexes by official base name, by branch of service, and by state or country. An alphabetical unit index lists major units and their home bases Libraries owning the first edition will want to update their collections with the second. Those libraries that missed purchasing the original edition will find the second edition an invaluable reference tool, ideally suited for ready reference.
