Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 9 to 12.

The newest edition of a classic Matt Christopher sports story throws together a boy and a dirt bike, a rich man and his jealous grandson, a race and a dream. Ron and his friend Tony find the dirt bike when they are diving in the lake. Luckily for Ron, Tony's big brother is a motorcycle mechanic and helps Ron put the bike back together. Having to earn the money for parts and race entry fees gives Ron the incentive to find the work to pay for it all. He takes on odd jobs for an eccentric older man and finds that he was a motorcycle racer in his youth. The man's grandson, however, throws a nasty wrench into Ron's first races. The story is low key--more a series of anecdotes than a story with a strong problem to solve. It is a pleasant story with the characteristic threads of a Matt Christopher book--responsibility, hard work, family closeness, and just deserts. Reviewer: Diane Carver Sekeres, Ph.D.

Matt Christopher, The Dirt Bike Racer

Ron Baker one of the main characters in the book went with his friend tony to go scuba diving. Ron's dad said that he could not go under 35 feet of water or he would get in trouble. So anyway Ron went down to the bottom because he saw a small white shiny thing. When he went down to look at it, it was a dirt bike. Ron wanted to be a scuba diver like his dad but since he found the motorcycle and found kids to ride with him. So he pulled out the dirt bike they found under water with the help of Tony and went to show the neighbor. The bike needed fixing up because it was rusted and broke so Ron got a yard work job and got enough money to fix it and get it running again, after that he found a race tournament and asked his dad if he could be in it. If you want to know if he entered it you have to read more!

This book The Dirt Bike Racer is written by Matt Christopher. Its genre is fiction according to me. My opinion about the book is that it was a great book almost one of the best one's I have read and its cool because its about sports and I am into sports too. I give this book a 5 star and 5 being the best. Right when I opened this book and read the first chapter I could not put the book down. It was the best book ever.

    Response Questions
1.My favorite part in the book is when he find the dirt bike on page 15-16. Its my favorite part because he gets the bike and fixes it with his job money. Later on in the book he gets good at racing and enters a race contest. The other kids in the race all hate Ron and try to wreck him.
2.Yes I would read another novel by this other. I would read another novel if it is sports and by Matt Christopher. I also would read another novel because the one I read was very interesting and cool.

This book is exciting for people who like dirt bikes

Dirt bike racer is about a boy whose dream is to be a dirt bike racer. He needs money to fix up a dirt bike that he found in a lake so he can race to his dream. He works hard doing lawn work to try to earn money to fix the dirt bike in hopes of entering a big race with many other dirt bike racers. I enjoyed this book because I liked the author's style and I like the series of Matt Christopher's books especially his fiction about sports. I recommend this book to people who like dirt bikes.

Hey do you like dirt bikes or racing? Then The Dirt Bike Racer is right for you. It is about Ron, a 12 year old kid, and Tony, Ron¿s best friend, who finds a dirt bike while scuba diving in Pumpkin Head Lake. Mr. Perks is a blind gentlemen that Ron works for so he can buy parts for the bike, and Mark Laverne is Mr. Perks¿ nephew. The story takes place in a small town, Oradell, N.Y, in August 1977. It¿s in the countryside so there¿s lots of space to ride the bike. I thought it was a good book because I felt like I was actually there. The book is so good I have already read it twice. I like it when Ron beats Mark, a professional dirt bike racer, and everybody laughs at him. I recommend that, The Dirt Bick Racer should be for people that like dirt bikes and for fourth graders. This book tells you a lesson that you should never give up even if you want to.

    Dirt Bike Finders

I liked it when they went scuba diving and found a dirt bike in the river. And then, he went to work for Mr. Perkins to raise money for parts of the bike. And then he entered a race. You will have to read the book to find out how it ends!
