Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cindy K. Schofield
According to the author "Everyone crashes sooner or later," (p. 20) so it's a good thing there is a chapter about safety equipment and racer precautions! This book about dirt bike Motocross racing (MX) will certainly get the attention of preteens interested in high-speed activities. Chapters describe the history of riding and jumping, variations in equipment and explanations of how the engines work to propel the dirt bikes. There is an excellent suggestion to "get schooled," and though the author suggests that one-on-one instruction is preferred, he allows that videos and books can be helpful as well. The rules of racing are presented in a general way and reference the broad areas of racing that are regulated. A chapter addressing riding responsibly includes the admonition that if riders damage the environment with their vehicles, they run the risk losing the privilege of being able to ride on public lands. It is too bad that environmental concerns cannot stand on their own—and have to be linked to protecting the rights of dirt-bikers—but at least there is some recognition of the problem. A table of contents, glossary, bibliography and index complete this nonfiction book and make it a good introduction to nonfiction reading. Reviewer: Cindy K. Schofield
VOYA - Jeff Mann
Five titles make up the Kid Racers series of books. These books cover niche sports. Each of the titles introduces the sport, describes the equipment, discusses kids currently involved in the sport, provides safety advice, and gives information on where and how kids can get involved if they desire. Each book's author is either an expert in that particular sport, or a writer who has previously covered the sport. Marketed for reluctant middle school and junior high readers, these books are visually appealing—packed with current and colorful photographs of the various sports, and laid out with generous spacing so that text does not overwhelm reluctant readers. Various pieces of trivia or related sport information are sprinkled throughout the book to break up each chapter. Each book is well-organized and well-written using basic vocabulary. Sport-specific terminology is also clearly explained. All books contain twenty chapters — each only two pages in length. Many readers will certainly be left with an "I can do that, too" attitude after finishing any of the books in the series. Teachers and librarians will want to consider this series if looking for sports-related material that is kid-friendly and a quick read. Reviewer: Jeff Mann
