VOYAAs in these authors' The Dateable series, which includes The Dateable Rules and Dateable: Are You? Are They? (Revell/Baker Books, 2003, 2004), this new book uses an appealing format and hip language to present compulsively readable advice to teens while quoting scripture and promoting a Christian way of life. The Dirt on Sex offers advice on resisting peer and media pressure to have sex and dealing with regret about having had sex too soon. It covers oral sex, condom use, homosexuality, the threat of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and the emotional consequences of having sex before marriage, all while clearly promoting abstinence as the only effective birth control method as well as the only emotionally and physically safe choice. God's will and scripture are not mentioned until nearly a third of the book is complete, but after that point Lookadoo's writing is heavy with such references. The section on homosexuality begins with an extended analogy between being gay and being a criminal, equating the two as choices to be made, both negative. This viewpoint is one with which some readers will not agree and can be interpreted as homophobic. The fact that these are Christian publications is not indicated on the front cover, title page, or back cover of the books, a definite flaw in light of the Christian teen population that the series seeks to reach or perhaps even a deception designed to hook teen readers before presenting the Christian message.
