Overview

Homicide Lieutenant Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels is in some serious trouble. Her boyfriend wants to get married. Her partner wants to transfer to another department. Her dead father may not be dead after all. And a brilliant sociopath known as the Chemist is poisoning Chicago’s food supply, killing hundreds of people.

Jack is put in charge of the case. But how do you catch someone who is always in disguise, who ingeniously spreads toxins in restaurants, grocery stores, and fast-food places without leaving any clues?

Time is running out. The Chemist has something big planned - something really big - and Jack has to push herself to the limits of her capabilities, or else everyone she knows and everything she holds dear will be destroyed.

In Dirty Martini, Jack faces her toughest adversary yet: a sicko who wants to murder an entire city. Can she catch him - and decide whether to accept boyfriend Latham’s surprise proposal - without destroying both her reputation and her sanity?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

A pair of gifted, award-winning readers make the audio version of Konrath's fourth mystery to feature Lt. Jack Daniels a rare, funny and very exciting listening experience. While Jack (short for Jacqueline) copes with problems in her private life, a really scary terrorist who calls himself the Chemist is literally holding the city of Chicago for ransom, demanding a huge payoff to stop injecting deadly toxins into food, drugs, even children's sandals. Many people have already died, and the Chemist seems to have something even more vicious in mind. Dick Hill catches the slightly edgy but never over-the-top killer perfectly, the kind of ordinary lunatic who might go unnoticed on the street. Susie Breck creates a perfect Jack Daniels by mixing wry wit, drink recipes and growing apprehension to capture just the right taste for mystery connoisseurs. Simultaneous release with the Hyperion hardcover (Reviews, Apr. 23). (July)

From The Critics
A vengeful serial killer stirs (and shakes) Jack Daniels to action. Liquor is no quicker than Lieutenant Jacqueline (Jack) Daniels whenever a beset and jittery Chicago needs a lift. Maybe that's why Jack gets the nod in the case of the wacko with the botulism dispenser. "The people of Chi-Town love you," says her boss in the face of Jack's noticeable disenchantment. "You'll be giving hope to the hopeless." So she signs on. But Jack's right to be leery. To begin with, the case bears all the marks of a career-breaker. Beyond that, the self-described Chemist is as scary a serial killer as ever followed in the footsteps of Hannibal Lecter. His ultimatum to the city fathers: $2 million, or botulism for your babies. As if threats of plague weren't enough, there are galling complexities on the home front. Latham, Jack's otherwise adorable boyfriend, has proposed matrimony at a time when Jack's hair and makeup haven't been checked for hours. In addition, Jack is working with an FBI agent so hot that although she's charged with saving Chicago from mass murder, she can't keep herself from staring at his crotch. And don't ask what's going on with her long-lost father, whose reported death may be greatly exaggerated. In the past, Konrath has done creditable work (Rusty Nail, 2006, etc.), but here the prose ranges from careless to wretched, and the plot demands a breathalyzer.

A fun, quick read with an awesome heroine

As a bourbon drinker, I HAD to read a book with a female detective/heroine named Jack Daniels. And she does not disappoint. In an opening scene, she nearly shoots an 'intruder' in her home - who turns out to be a member of a mariachi band her boyfriend hired to help him propose to her. But she's distracted when a serial killer called 'The Chemist' starts randomly poisoning food in Chicago's stores and restaurants. Jack proves she is ridiculously brave (and irresistible to men) throughout the course of the book. I don't usually read mysteries, but my husband felt that the book's humor coupled with the awesome heroine would make me enjoy the book. He was right!

    Not Quite as Funny

I read the other three books by this author and loved them. They were laugh out loud funny but not so with this one. While I still enjoyed Dirty Martini and will continue reading this series 'hopefully there will be many more books in this series' I didn't have nearly as many belly laughs this time around and that was a disappointment.

    TOPNOTCH TALE AND FIRST-RATE NARRATION

Have said it before and I'll say it again, If Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, and Rusty Nail are on your favorites list, add one more - Dirty Martini. The fourth in Konrath's series featuring Chicago policewoman J. A. 'Jack' Daniels is another thriller laced with laughter and rich in outre characters. No question that narrators Susie Breck and Dick Hill are on the favorites list of audio book listeners. They're among the best voice performers working today, and they enliven Dirty Martini with perceptive readings delivered with gusto just as they did with Rusty Nail. Jack faces the toughest challenge of her career with a loony killer on the loose. He calls himself The Chemist. Crazy man? Yes, but smart ? indeed. He's spreading a deadly toxin throughout Chicago - 30 dead so far. And no one has a clue because he's in disguise. He prepares well for his deadly errands - false moustache, phony shoulder length hair, clip-on body jewelry, even three inch lifts in his shoes. How does he spread his evil in grocery stores, restaurants? With the help of a tube hidden by his long sleeves. Jack is assigned to the case. As if finding this sociopath isn't enough, her partner wants a transfer and pretty soon Latham, Jack's love interest, is found unconscious on the floor of their apartment after bringing home a sack of toxin loaded take-out. The Chemist is too close for comfort, and Jack knows that better than anyone else. Now, how do you write a page turner with an ascending body count and work in healthy doses of humor? Whatever the trick is J.A. Konrath knows it well. Topnotch tale and first-rate narration. Don't miss it! - Gail Cooke
