Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jamaica Johnson Conner
What do you get when you match humor with scientific facts about bugs? A clever blend of education and fun! Bonotaux accomplishes this blend in his book, which provides scientific information about arthropods, such as insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. Specifically, cockroaches, millipedes, centipedes, wasps, horseflies, houseflies, mosquitoes, fleas, lice, ticks, stinkbugs, bedbugs, and spiders are detailed. He personifies these creatures with colorful illustrations mirroring a comic book style. Bonotaux addresses misconceptions, visual descriptions, benefits, and negative aspects of the different bugs, while incorporating cultural cliches and allusions. This excerpt evidences his creative ability to mix humor with facts: "We remind you, with your cute little heads (which we love very much), that the plural of louse is lice, just as mouse becomes mice, but the plural of house is not hice and the singular of ice is certainly not ouse!" An excellent companion for a student's bug collection endeavor, this text would also be a perfect and playful addition to the science classroom.
