Gulliver Dowd is a little person in a world of hurt. After his sister, an NYPD policewoman, is murdered, he becomes a licensed PI. Dowd is shocked to discover that his mysterious new client is Nina, his high-school girlfriend and the one true love of his life. But the real surprise is yet to come. Nina hires Gulliver to find her runaway daughter, convincing him to take the case only when she confesses that the missing girl is Dowd's daughter too, the product of their high-school romance.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist
"Gulliver is sarcastic, calloused, and tenacious, but beneath the façade, he is a sympathetic tragic hero with a secret heart of gold. Veteran crime-fiction author Coleman proves adept at writing for adult reluctant readers without sacrificing his signature hard-boiled style. A fine addition to the Rapid Reads series."
Louise Penny
"A little man with a huge heart and a huge chip on his shoulder, Gulliver Dowd swaggers into the crime fiction world and takes his place with the great investigators. Smart, vulnerable, wounded, heartbreakingly hopeful, I just adore his company. This is a staggering achievement. Bravo!"
CM Magazine
"A good read...Recommended."

"I read this one in one sitting, and not just because...it is designed for fast and easy reading. I just loved the characters, the story and the writing style too much to put it down...Fast-paced work, great for reluctant readers and just the stuff we need to get more PI fans! Looking forward to the second Dowd novel and hoping there will be many more!"
Children's Literature - Laura J. Brown
Private Investigator Gulliver Dowd is a no-nonsense, gets-the-job-done P.I. He is tough—he has to be—but he is not what people expect. He looks different, and he handles himself differently than other people because of who he is. Gulliver has dealt with a lot of disappointment and loss, and he is very sarcastic and suspicious; these are great qualities for a P.I. One day, Gulliver gets an unexpected call from his high school sweetheart, Nina, about a job. He wonders if he should even meet with her. But it is a job and he needs the work, so he decides to hear what she has to say. He meets Nina. It has been seventeen years since he last saw her, and she is even more beautiful than he remembers. Feelings and emotions come rushing back to him, but he has to keep himself in check, because he just does not trust the woman who broke his heart. Gulliver listens to her story, but he does not believe her. He decides that Nina is just not worth the emotion or trouble and decides to let her find someone else to handle the job. Then she drops the bombshell. Her daughter is missing, and the girl is his daughter too. Nina never bothered to tell him all those years ago that he was a father. Now he has no choice but to investigate. He wants to find the daughter he never knew he had and try to find something good out of a painful situation. This is a rapid read mystery novel that gets hot and steamy, and has unexpected quick twists and turns. Reviewer: Laura J. Brown
VOYA - Barbara Johnston
In Dirty Work, Gulliver Dowd, a misshapen "little person," is a private investigator with a big personality. Nina (Gulli's lover in high school) hires him to find her missing teenage daughter, who Nina claims is Gulli's child. After an encounter with a mob boss, a chase, and a car explosion, Gulli finds the girl and unravels Nina's falsehoods. Both titles contain mature dialogue and situations. This title features memorable main characters and a tightly woven plot that grabs and holds the reader's interest. Sentences are short, vocabulary is basic, and the novel can be read in an hour or two.It is perfect for mature reluctant readers, ESL learners, or anyone who enjoys a good story.
