Overview

The moral model of disability, the editors argue, is largely the result of superstition and ignorance, while the medical model is largely based on the needs of the disability care industry rather than on the disabled. Instead, the editors and contributors here work from the notion that the minority (social) model, which holds that disability is a social construct resulting in denial of basic rights, will soon supplant the other two. Contributors therefore offer perspectives on how that model applies to using spiritual strategies in rehabilitation, medicating children in foster care, treating ADHD in college students, promoting wellness for disabled children and their families, delivering mental health services in rural and urban settings, dealing with new implications for the Americans with Disabilities Act, and refining theories on disability by considering new social norms.
