Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Carol Buchanan
This oversized book provides introductory information about Vesuvius, the Black Death, the Hindenburg, the Titanic, the Dust Bowl, and other lesser-known disasters-a flood, an avalanche, a cyclone, a blizzard, a tsunami-that happened from 79 A.D. to 1974. Some young readers will be fascinated by the destructive power of these natural and man-made disasters, many of which they may have heard of but know little about. Each two-page spread contains excellent illustrations, maps, calendars, and easy-to-understand explanations of what led to the catastrophe, what people did to survive, and what life was like after the event. Some entries include small, actual photos. The final spread on future disasters warns about environmental disasters that man can avoid, as well as the possible effects of natural disasters on our heavily populated planet. By learning about a particular event in this volume readers will gain a beginner's understanding of the general phenomenon. Part of DK's Eyewitness Classics, this publication provides an overview of the subject, not enough information for an in-depth report, but enough to whet the appetite of a curious reader. Index. Illus. Photos. Maps. VOYA Codes: 4Q 4P M J (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Broad general YA appeal, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).
