Chapter One

A small-group leader tells how preparation, illustrations, and group dynamics can be used in leading small-group Bible studies.

Preparing for the Study

When we consider Jesus' example, His lifelong reverence for God's Word is evident. Matthew 5:19 demonstrates this and suggests the attitude I need to have toward the Word of God: "Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven."

Respect for God's Word governs a careful preparation for the groups I lead. I do a thorough study of each lesson or topic. Then I pray through the Scriptures covered in that particular study. Finally, I pray through the Scriptures for the members of the group.

This preparation gives me confidence to communicate the content. I find that the more prepared I am, the less I talk. Ideally, I'm there to guide the discussion, not to dominate it.

In preparing each lesson, I develop a simple objective that states what truth(s) I'd like the group to discover. I write the discussion questions with the answers in different colors, and I record any illustrations that help teach or communicate the idea.

These are my permanent study guides. I keep them together in a notebook. When I want to lead a study I've led before, I pull out the study guide, revise it where necessary, pray through it, and it's ready to be used as effectively as the first time.

Illustrations

Small-group settings allow for a variety of teaching approaches. I use illustrations to clarify and communicate ideas.

Jesus used illustrations freely. Watching events around Him supplied Him with an abundance of material for teaching life principles to His followers. Mark 12:41-44 records Jesus stationing Himself to watch people contribute to the treasury. When the poor widow dropped her two copper coins into the slot, her example became an on-the-spot illustration for the disciples to learn the spirit behind giving. I strive to be observant in everyday situations and apply those situations to our study.

Group Dynamics

I use group dynamics so that the whole group will participate. I define a group dynamic as any activity that personally involves all the group members. I'm convinced that the use of group dynamics increases understanding, retention, involvement, and enjoyment in the Bible study. A question/answer discussion is a highly structured group dynamic. Other dynamics include role plays, debates, and skits.

Chapter Two

Three key components of small groups can work together to keep your group on track: (1) clearly articulated objectives; (2) Scripture that supports and refreshes those objectives; and (3) questions that help you evaluate your success. Here is how one small-group leader sets up his goals.

Objectives

To relate ourselves to Christ and His plan for our lives.

To develop a close, honest relationship with others.

To create a spiritual climate in the areas where we live.

To create an impact in the world through specific service to others.

Scripture

Luke 11:10; John 15:5; Acts 17:28; Ephesians 3:17

Matthew 18:20; Acts 2:42; Ephesians 4:2-3; James 5:16

Matthew 5:13-16; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Ephesians 5:1; Colossians 3:10-15

Matthew 20:26-28; 25:35-36; Luke 10:2; John 21:15-17; James 2:17

Questions

Are we seeking the mind of Christ in our lives?

Are we a joy to live with?

Are we salty enough to make another person thirsty?

Are we part of the solution?

-From Training Manual for Small Group Leaders, by Chaplain Robert Black
