Discipline: Six Steps to Unleashing Your Hidden Potential

Overview

This book is about how to acquire the most important tool in one's lifetime: DISCIPLINE. Throughout the book I refer to the image of a person opening a door, seeing a reflection of him or her in a mirror. This is an image I call on again and again; because it symbolizes the relationship I built with myself in the years it took me to acquire DISCIPLINE. It was all about me fulfilling a contract with myself. This book is about you and the constant struggle you have with yourself to fulfill that same promise. If you...

If you don't like what you see in the mirror, then this book can help you develop the DISCIPLINE to eventually enjoy the new you. It's a daily battle as you seek out that elusive ingredient to balancing home, career, personal time, family, and the other forces life hurls at you daily.

There are two players. It's you against you 24 hours a day. The battle lines have been drawn, and the field is filled with many obstacles, your career, family, health, taxes, etc. It's like being in a fifteen round fight everyday and the opponent is you. You're constantly hitting yourself. When you get hit and stumble, DISCIPLINE is the tool to help pick you back up again. DISCIPLINE shows you how to avoid complacency and stay focused on your goals regardless of the unplanned crises that enter your life. These six steps will guide you through to acquiring DISCIPLINE:

  1. Establishing a Contract with Yourself. You make the laws (priorities, rules, and guidelines) and act as your own cop to enforce them. It's mental toughness that, once acquired, will change your entire attitude.
  2. Establishing Goals. Setting a mental contract with yourself allows you to set goals and know that you will achieve them! Achieving your goals on time should be your minimum standard of success.
  3. Avoid Complacency. Constantly challenging yourself, looking for more and more creative ways to achieve goals ahead of schedule. Having a continuous thirst for knowledge, never settling for less.
  4. Maintain Values. Personal and professional values set the foundation for your goals as well as how you go about achieving them. You'll discover DISCIPLINE brings deep, inner satisfaction and integrates what matters most to you in life, than achieving monetary wealth.
  5. Uniting the Body and Mind. The path to DISCIPLINE is grueling. The only way you'll make it is if you take care of your body as well as your mind. Diet and regular exercise are of the utmost importance.
  6. Never Compare Yourself to Someone Else. While it's great to have role models, you need to make sure that your goals are realistic and that they're yours, not someone else's.
The bottom line is that the formula for getting the utmost out of life is DISCIPLINE, but you have to manage your life as if it were a business, adhering to your priorities, goals, rules and guidelines. DISCIPLINE will force you to expand your knowledge, to persevere in order to stay ahead of the game all with hard facts, separated from fiction. DISCIPLINE will dare you to make a sincere and honest commitment to yourself. DISCIPLINE will give you both the physical and mental strength needed to remain committed; in this book you will find the facts you need to make important decisions by prioritizing your life before establishing goals. DISCIPLINE is a prerequisite to success. Once you've established the proper routine and complete your goals on a daily basis, you will experience incredible confidence; you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. My book can take you there now; however, it's up to you to make the correct decision, for it's your livelihood. Start today why waste another day, it's a simple read that will take you to where it is you want to be. It will change your life forever!

    A great inspiration!

This book was a great wake up call for me. Reading about how Harris took control at such a young age made me even more hungry and made me determined. I know that goals are not impossible and that anything can truly be done. But the question is, do you really want it ? Because nothing good really comes easy. You have to work for it and success does not come cheap. But if Harris can do it, why can't I do it.

Your Roadmap To Gain Meaning In Life

"Discipline: Six Steps To Unleashing Your Hidden Potential" is an extraordinary example of what a person can accomplish for himself, and inspire others to accomplish, in a set amount of time. What you realize further into the book is that once you have acquired discipline, and the accomplishments that accompany it, that set amount of time, in which you persevere and improve, becomes a lifetime - a lifetime lived to the fullest - where every minute you're moving ahead rather than simply maintaining. Harris is an extreme example of one kind of discipline - a person who set out to conquer the corporate latter and accomplish career related goals year after year. The epiphany comes when he reveals that only after achieving so many of these "smaller" goals, did the greater goal or accomplishment comes into view - that being the ability to assist those around him in making their own lives better- this helping-hand, being the key to increasing the quality of life on this planet (more-so than any other "quick-fix" or spur-of-the-moment resolution). "Discipline: Six Steps To Unleashing Your Hidden Potential" will help you find a purpose and meaning for your life that outlasts even your most ambitious momentary goals - that being becoming disciplined and therefore a leader and mentor, armed with the knowledge and respect to make ACTUAL change in the world. Harris makes it clear that it starts and ends with discipline - the only true ingredient for consistent - lasting success. Beware and be excited! This book doesn't provide a quick-fix, rather a realistic look at how you can actually change, and become the person you truly want to be, rather than simply day-dreaming about it.

    DISCIPLINE - What a great feeling !!

I was lent this book by a close friend...WOW !!! I re-read the first 30 pages 3 times because, although maybe extreme to some, this guy was down right inspiring!! Every time I read it I felt absolutely fantastic - as if I knew what the answer to all my problems was - I was lacking discipline !! I'm sure that some people might find it a little strange at first (the fact that he only sleeps 4 hours a day or that he'll go to the gym in extreme pain from injury) as a matter of fact even I thought it was a little too extreme...but as I read on realized that discipline brought with it other qualities that are so rare in many people that I felt compelled to apply the lessons learnt. Qualities such as honesty, integrity, responsibility, reliability...etc..along with discipline are everything that you'll need to achieve and conquer the dreams and challenges in your life. These are the type of qualities that make an ideal human being and are all by-products of becoming disciplined. Discplined to be be the person you want to be and acheive the goals you want in life - this is what I believe Harris Kern is sharing with us throughout the book with his insiring stories about himself and others. The content is simple!! If you're seeking to become a better person in addition to achieving what you want then look no further. I've just ordered his other two books on discipline and can't wait.

    Just Do It !!!

Harris has given us the tools to succeed; in whatever course we take. Self-discipline is hard but it beats having someone else do it for us. In this book, Harris uses his own experiences as well as others to show us the way and the benefits of self-motivation, setting goals. Being disciplined may mean different things to different people. This book simplifies how anybody can improve his or her life by improving how they schedule their time and daily routine. Set goals and just do whatever it takes to achieve them. He also lists his favorite sayings, I have one that I think he would like, ¿Lead, Follow or get the ____ out of the way¿. Harris is the leader on this subject & I am happy to follow.

You've got to want it to get it

If you believe that reading a book is all it takes to add Discipline to your life, and hope that this book is the magical pixie dust that solves your problems, you are sadly mistaken. However, if you are sick of a haphazard lifestyle, are determined to whip yourself physically, mentally, and professionally into shape, but don¿t know how to go about doing it, you will find this book to be a valuable guide. Part self-help book and part memoir, Discipline is written in a reflective, stream-of-consciousness style that takes you through the six steps: (1) Making a Contract with Yourself; (2) Setting Goals; (3) Avoiding Complacency; (4) Maintaining Values; (5) Uniting the Body and Mind; and (6) Compare Yourself to No One. While much of the author¿s anecdotes center around his professional and athletic life and not enough (in my humble opinion) on how Discipline can also help relationships with your family, the stories illustrate very clearly how Discipline can benefit anyone, regardless of his/her priorities and life goals. Bottomline: Discipline is acquired through hard work and a constant avoidance of the path of least resistance. You¿ve got to want it to get it. Without that inner drive, no book in the world can help you. But if you¿re eager to unleash your hidden potential, and you¿re willing to work hard at it, then you will find this book invaluable.

    Discipline Can Change Your Life

I have purchased both of Harris Kern¿s books on discipline and I am very impressed by the way he has used discipline to create the life he wanted. Over the years I have spent hundreds of dollars on self help books expecting something magical to happen by just reading them.I was always looking outside of myself for the answers. My life up to the time I purchased Harris¿s books had been a "woulda, coulda, shoulda" existence. At 50 years of age I really wanted to make some drastic changes. It was the terrible news that my best friend had received that really made me think about my own mortality and the time I had already wasted. He was told he had 3 to 5 months to live and he's only 46 years old. He has cancer all through his body and brain. I'm sure he thought he would have another 25 or 30 years to do everything he wanted to do. Discipline Six Steps to Unleashing Your hidden Potential by Harris Kern and Discipline Training The Mind To Manage You Life by Harris Kern and Karen Willi do not come with a magic wand or a promise that by just reading the books your life will change. What they do say is this, if you follow the advice given in the books you will develop discipline. Discipline in mind, body and spirit. And when you have discipline you can accomplish all your goals. I might as well throw away all the other self- help I purchased over the years because of them can even come close to these 2 books.

    Excellent advise!

This book was a very good read, with credible, believable, real-world stories from Harris' life that truly reinforce his messages. Harris doesn't preach or nag, and he doesn't beat around the bush. The book lays it all out for you, all you have to do is decide you want to "unleash your hidden potential", and decide what really matters in your life. There is no magic, no "Silver Bullets" for success. It is a number of simple things, like setting goals (major and minor), a self-contract, adherence to the contract, following a personal code, these are the things that will take you to success. This book takes you through a man's life and shows you how sage advise has been applied, and succeeded! Discipline is key in life, as well as the data center, and Harris has managed to write great books about both! You need a plan, and you need to stick to it. If you are looking to make exceptions to the plan (excuses), you should expect that there will consequences. To borrow from the IT domain, it's not a Service Level Agreement (SLA), it is more of a Behavior Level Agreement (BLA) with yourself.

This puts the SELF in self help!

This is a very easy-to-read heavy hitting roadmap of what it takes to be successful. The principles make a lot of sense and are delivered with amusing Dilbert-style life examples and Discipline solutions. The book doesn't promise success by just reading the book. It challenges you to help yourself by being Disciplined. To me, the key messages in the book were a great reminder of how I was going to fulfill my plans and dreams as I entered the work force. As an entrepreneur and executive today, they are more important than ever. Thanks for the inspiration (and perspiration), Harris!

    wisdom fo simplicity

The simplicity and versatility of this book is intoxicating. The author makes no prophecies, but rather a conclusive case in revealing the mystery behind achieving any and all goals. The revealation is 'discipline' aptly illustrated as the propeller. What a concept. A million thanks Mr. Kern, for your wisdom and the generosity to share it.

    Discipline is everything

Having read my share of self help books, I was reluctant to attempt another. A friend's tenacity however, induced me to read Mr. Kern's Discipline book. I am eternally grateful to him for his persistence. A contract with yourself, what a concept. The discipline to live up to your own expectations and dreams. This concept has created such sense of lucidity that I can not imagine ever being without it again. The book is well written and concise. I continue to recommend it to any one I know with as much tenacity as my friend exhibited towards me.

    H. Kerns Owner's Manual for Life

I just love Harris' book and could not put it down. I wish I could meet the genius behind this book. It is packed with so much useful information. I've read it twice and already see an improvement in my attitude and outlook on life. Harris said it all when he wrote that it's not about material things, but rather professional accomplishments. To me, that's where it's at. From business to personal relationships, this book is like an owner's manual on life. Thank you Harris for sharing your wisdom with the world. Five stars are not enough to rate this superb piece of literature! When can we expect the sequel?

Discipline: Six Steps to Unleashing Your Hidden Potential

Great insight and easily understood considering the nebulous subject. As I read the book, I could see areas in my life where I could apply the concepts. I have been applying a few of the principles and people have already made positive comments on the changes they've seen. I have recommended this book to many of my co-workers.

Discipline: Six Steps to Unleashing Your Hidden Potential

This is the first time I have read a book & found it compelling enough to write a review. I always knew I had potential & could do more with my life, but could never figure out what was missing. This is like the condensed version handbook for discipline that is packed full of reliable information. It helped me reinforce what I knew worked & showed me how to change the things that didn't. Its all good, solid information that gives you the desire & push to motivate yourself everyday. Its the book I lend to friends that I know can use some down to earth advice that is 100% effective.
