Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Is Doing to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family

( 9 )

Overview

"As [Disconnect] shows, cell phones may actually be doing damage to far more than our attention spans-and could, in fact, be killing us." -Salon.com.

Since the invention of radar, cell phone radiation was assumed to be harmless because it wasn't like X-rays. But a sea change is now occurring in the way scientists think about it. The latest research ties this kind of radiation to lowered sperm counts, an increased risk of Alzheimer's, and even cancer. In Disconnect, National Book...

In Disconnect, National Book Award finalist Devra Davis tells the story of the dangers that the cell phone industry is knowingly exposing us-and our children-to in the pursuit of profit. More than five billion cell phones are currently in use, and that number increases every day. Synthesizing the findings and cautionary advice of leading experts in bioelectricalmagnetics and neuroscience, Davis explains simple safety measures that no one can afford to ignore.

Meet the Author

Devra Davis

Devra Davis, Ph. D., M. P. H., is a scientist, professor, speaker, and acclaimed author, and recently testified before a United States Senate committee about the dangers of cell phone use. Her first book, When Smoke Ran Like Water, was a National Book Award finalist. She is the founder of Environmental Health Trust, www.environmentalhealthtrust.org. She lives in Washington, D.C., and Jackson, Wyoming.

Good To Know

Davis was fired from her first job as a summer camp counselor in New England. Recalls Davis, "I had taught the campers 'marching' songs, some of which I had learned from my drill sergeant father, like 'Dirty Lil' and 'Sound Off' and others which were anti-war ditties, such as 'I Ain't a Marching Anymore,' and 'The Cat Came Back.' I got canned because the camp director made me out to be someone who would not always fall in line. Who knew?"

Davis on her family ties: "I am very proud of my big-talking, big-walking siblings and my own grand, noisy Langer, Davis, Morgenstern, Tuckfelt, Goldenberg family, where, as in Garrison Keillor's famous town, all the children are above average, all the women are strong and all the men are good looking. My daughter Lea just graduated from Oberlin College with a double major in the two things you are not supposed to argue about in polite company -- Politics and Religion -- and is teaching in a very modern Orthodox Jewish pre-school in Northern California that includes several gay parents. My son, Aaron, is a former United States Marine and is en route to becoming a real chef, so he is both strong and secure. My husband, Richard Morgenstern, regularly traipses around Asia getting governments to reduce their use of filthy, sickening fuels. The entire lot of us likes to work just a bit outside the box."

According to Davis, "The town I grew up in was famous in the way that Jack the Ripper and the Son of Sam were famous, so of course nobody ever talked about it. Only when I went away to college did I ever hear that a town called Donora had been badly polluted. I was really shocked and believed that there just had to be another Donora somewhere. There was not."

Required reading for all cell phone and PDA phone users

For me this book is the "Silent Spring" for the cell phone/PDA phone user. It describes a telecom industry that seems to care more for the balance sheet, profits, and product innovation than with consumer health and safety. A must read for the cell phone and PDA phone user. Sobering.

I live between 2000-2300 feet from three cell phone towers. I had noticed that plants would not grow properly in my garden and inside the home. In some areas plants would die. I would replace the dead plants and the replacement plants would also die. I eventually took all of my wireless devices out of service at my home and my garden sprung back into life! The wireless radiation was causing my plants to deform, stunt, and in some cases die. I also had really painful and sensitive teeth during the weeks after taking the devices out of service, it eventually cleared up. I no longer have wireless devices at my home, as they can be biologically toxic to plants and teeth! The wireless devices that appeared to be causing this were outdoor temperature sensors and Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) utility meters. I had already established before this that my Wifi was making me sick and had already taken that out of service.
