Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
The author of this work was part of a creative team including a designer and two illustrators. Perhaps that explains the occasional lack of cohesion in the work. There are questions left unanswered and in some of the pictures it is difficult to identify which insect or animal is being discussed. The movable actions of the book are based on a device that enables a similar but different illustrated page to be pulled out from under a window in each of the right-hand pages of the book. The images on top are in black and white and the emerging images are in full color with additional details. The book's premise has a teacher taking his class for a nature walk. Along the way he asks questions; for instance, what insects might live inside a dead log or how do beavers live inside their homes of sticks and mud. The left hand pages are designed to look as if they are from a nature workbook, giving additional information. The unusual pull-out illustrations will be appealing, and as a beginner book for a young naturalist, it may encourage further reading.
