Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
The more I read this series, "Discover Science," the more I love it. The table of contents is fascinating. Seeing the photo of some lizard grabbing its tail, surrounded by the bulleted chapters, makes me want to read more. Each table of contents in the series is like that. At the very end of each book is a list of factoids with which an eight-year-old could enlighten you for quite a while—I know because my granddaughter did. There is also a wealth of information in the parent and teacher notes with cross-curricular ideas and links as well as ideas to go deeper. The glossary is colorful and encourages a look. There are also fun reptile projects. The book gives directions to make a frilled cape that you can pull and "scare" others, a pop-up croc card and a sticky tongue. There is so much to learn about reptiles. Their fangs and teeth are suited for what they hunt and eat. "Form follows function" is a science standard in every state. Reptiles lack outside ears, but hear through the eardrum on each side of their head. Although not library bound the price is great allowing parents and teachers to add this series to their collections.
