In today's wired world, robots are everywhere: in the movies, on TV, in space, in computer games. Definitions of new words are provided on each page, and at the end children can do one of three hands-on activities to create their own robots.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
The table of contents in each book in the series is stimulating to read. The short paragraph sections with many color photos are riveting. The text explains how robotic arms and hands work. Robots are used in many areas, such as cleaning an airplane or where human work would be too costly or take too much time. Humanoid and animal robots are featured with some scary similarities; for example, there is a hairy cockroach robot. Robots are used to explore volcanoes, Antarctica, and under oceans. Special robots have been used in space, as well as in the farms to scare away pests and undertake repetitive tasks. Robots even make great assistants in hospital operations. Sci-fi robots such as Short Circuit and Yoda are featured as well. In the activity section there are instructions to make a moving arm and try to work it like a robot with someone giving you instructions, as well as other activities. In the parents/teacher section there are ideas to prompt a robotic science fiction story or a story of a human versus a robot volleyball team. After reading the book a teacher could invite a student to make a Venn diagram of robots and humans to learn comparing and contrasting skills. There is a "did you know" section with factoids. Kids delight in factoids. There is a robot quiz to check your reading comprehension of the book. Parents and teachers should add the "Discover Science" series to their collections.
