Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Lisa G Brown, BS, RD, LD, CDE(College of Saint Benedict)Description: This book presents tools to help students logically interpret nutrition information that they hear in the news or read in magazines or on the Internet to personalize and use the information their everyday lives. This update of the 2010 includes the newest information available on nutrition.
Purpose: The goal is to help students learn enough about nutrition that they become sophisticated consumers of both nutrients and nutrition information. The book uses a unique behavioral approach to accomplish this. Each chapter ends with a "Learning Portfolio" that explains various ways for students to use their individual learning and studying styles to put the information to use. The book does have a place as nutrition affects all individuals and giving students the opportunity to not just memorize material but to actually put it to use to improve their own health serves a dual role.
Audience: It is intended as an introductory textbook on nutrition for students. A section at the end of each chapter uses a typical college student as an example for readers to follow and apply the information introduced in each chapter.
Features: A detailed table of contents begins the book. Each chapter uses color pictures, tables, and "FYI" and "Quick Bites" sections in addition to the Learning Portfolio to enhance learning. Answers to chapter study questions appear at the end of the book. Other helpful features include two appendixes on nutrition for Canadians and ATP produced from macronutrients, a glossary, and an index. A student study guide as well as food composition tables and appendixes are available online.
Assessment: Its unique behavioral approach to learning makes this a useful nutrition textbook. It allows students with different learning styles to not only learn but also implement what they learn in their own lives. The use of color pictures, tables, and study questions enhances learning. This edition was necessary to present the most current nutrition information.
