Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is a very thorough book about libraries, written by a very competent author, filled with facts and figures that librarians and serious students will appreciate. Each page is designed to be eye-catching. Children in the colorful photographs are peers of the target readership, captions are efficiently accurate and sidebars abound. The sidebars contain facts¾"In 2000, the U.S. armed forces operated 341 libraries. Various government agencies maintain a total of 1,411 libraries"; lists¾Some Important Daily Newspapers, Dictionaries of all Kinds; and web sites¾Some Internet Search Engines, Almanacs and Fact Books. Ms. Flanagan has written over seventy books and one can surmise that she has firsthand knowledge of her subject. Although the author's no-nonsense writing supports the general opinion that libraries are no-nonsense places, the book serves as an excellent introduction to the vast world of learning. A glossary of library terms, a brief history of libraries, a list of web sites and a variety of important libraries to visit make this book complete. 200l, Gareth Stevens, $28.95. Ages 8 to 12.
