Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Combine sharks with a graphic novel and you have a sure fire eye-catcher for young readers. This graphic "novel" (it's really nonfiction) lists ten sharks that are commonly thought to be the deadliest to humans who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Beginning with the tenth—lemon shark—to the number one, which is not a great white (surprise!), author/publisher Joe Brusha and many illustrators feature the most deadly features of these large, predatory fish such as fast swimming, keen sense of smell and amazing supply of sharp teeth. Introducing these ocean dwellers is Andy Dehart, who has worked for aquariums and Discovery Channel's "Shark Week." Featured sharks include mako, tiger, hammerhead, great white, oceanic white tipped, bull, blue, sand tiger and grey reef, in no particular order—read the book to find out how they rank. Each has an accompanying story or cautionary tale which is often true. The book provides tips for avoiding shark attacks as well as information about many sharks' threatened or endangered status, plus how lemon sharks are studied to help scientists understand cancer in humans. Each shark description includes statistics: number of attacks on humans, unprovoked fatalities, and so on. Unfortunately, the book also features Discovery Channel advertisements for Shark Week, an upcoming program about dinosaurs and a web site where shark week items can be purchased.
