Overview
In 1492, Christopher Columbus returned from his westward voyage with a new discovery: the islands of present-day Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Hoping to find gold, Spanish authorities launched a number of exploratory missions in the region. Men like Hernán Cortás ruthlessly pushed into Mexico and surveyed the land, but also destroyed the great Aztec Empire. Other expeditions, undertaken by such explorers as Amerigo Vespucci, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Hernando de Soto, and George Vancouver, also changed the lives of the various indigenous peoples of the Americas, as new diseases, crops, and products were introduced to both hemispheres.
