Meet the Author

Susanna S. Epp received her Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Chicago, taught briefly at Boston University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently Vincent DePaul Professor of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and has published a number of articles and given many talks related to this topic. She has also spoken widely on discrete mathematics and has organized sessions at national meetings on discrete mathematics instruction. In addition to Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, she is co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Epp co-organized an international symposium on teaching logical reasoning, sponsored by the Institute for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), and she was an associate editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1991 to 2001. Long active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), she is a co-author of the curricular guidelines for undergraduate mathematics programs: CUPM Curriculum Guide 2004.

    As Clear as Mudd

    This book was awful in my opinion, I used it as an undergraduate and it was a component of an online class. You need serious teacher help and explanations for this book to work for you. The only thing it is good for is giving you problems to solve. And even some of the problems had errors in them. I wish they had negative stars on this review listing.

    good for introductory course

    this is a wonderful book for and introductory course, as most won't go past chapter 8. there were interesting and easy to follow examples and also more challenging ones. plenty of practice problems with answers in the back. also, the problems are straightforward and don't try to trick students.

    Average book

    I used this book as an undergrad, it was useful up to a point, then in the later chapters where the content is harder there is less examples and explanations are poor. If you have an instructor that does an excellent job of teaching then this book shouldn't be a problem, but if you use it for an online course, then I suggest you get another book to help yourself out.

    Not recommended for Online Students

    I used this book as an undergraduate and was very displeased with its helpfulness. It does not speak clearly and has minimal examples for reference. I had to purchase another textbook in order to learn the material.
