School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 6-9 Useful as brief introductions to medicine and discoveries/inventions, these attractive large-format books will motivate children to read more about these subjects. Disease and Medicine groups articles of varying lengths under the broad topics of medical history, diseases and modern medicine. Many health professions are also introduced. Great Discoveries and Inventions has a less flexible format, in that the authors devote two pages to each discovery or invention, ranging from Stone-Age scrapers and arrowheads to modern-day lasers and holograms. Both books are profusely illustrated with color photographs and drawings which have extensive informational captions. Words that are included in the glossaries are italicized within the text. The indexes are accurate and refer to information in the illustration captions as well as in the main text. Margaret M. Hagel, formerly at Ryan Upper School Library, Norfolk, Va.
