Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8--The well-established team of Hyde and Forsyth has collaborated again, this time creating an interesting and useful guide. Unlike many juvenile books that focus on a single disease or group of related ailments, this unique volume provides age-appropriate, thorough coverage of many major diseases and disorders, including those that are rare or historically significant. It is organized by body system with additional chapters on cancer, blood disorders, infectious diseases, and childhood diseases and vaccinations. The clearly written entries average one-to-five paragraphs in length and provide definitions, statistics, and information on the diseases' causes, symptoms, and treatments. Many entries are enhanced by shaded sidebars that include case studies and information about famous people who experienced the disease. The body-system chapters include simple anatomic drawings that identify primary organs. The only other illustrations are small black-and-white cartoons intended to add a light touch. The lack of color or photographs is unfortunate, especially in the sections on skin disorders and childhood diseases. Nevertheless, this book is a solid addition to libraries. Its organization makes it easy to use, and its succinct yet informative entries make it a ready-reference choice for young people.--Sheila G. Shellabarger, Fordham Health Sciences Library, Wright State University, Dayton, OH
