Overview

Disease Prevention and Treatment translates research findings from around the world into actionable, evidence-based protocols for the prevention and management of 130 common health concerns. This is the only book available to present thorough strategies for the promotion of good health using natural compounds, hormones, novel pharmaceutical agents, and comprehensive blood testing to complement conventional standard-of-care regimens and combat the diseases of aging.

The 5th edition has been comprehensively updated to provide the latest scientific findings on the optimal management of conditions ranging from cancer and cardiovascular disease, to arthritis and neurological disorders. Each protocol within this book contains detailed suggestions, based on Life Extension’s careful evaluation of thousands of peer-reviewed studies, that can help patients and physicians break free of the conventional one-size-fits-all approach to disease management.

For the past 33 years, Life Extension has published life-saving information a decade or more ahead of conventional medicine. A case-in-point is Life Extension’s advice to take low-dose aspirin to prevent heart attacks. While mainstream hospitals like Johns Hopkins now advocate aspirin to prevent heart attacks, the Life Extension Foundation® published evidence about aspirin’s benefits back in 1983. The Life Extension Foundation® then spent 15 years battling the FDA to force the agency to recognize the cardio-protective effects of low-dose aspirin.

When a serious medical disorder develops, most people have no one to turn to other than their doctor. The problem is that physicians are often too busy to keep up with the latest research findings. As a result, many patients suffer and die even though advanced therapies already exist that could cure them.
For example, in 2005 “Tamiflu®” became a household word as fears of an avian flu epidemic caused a shortage of this anti-viral drug. Those who purchased the year 2003 edition of Disease Prevention and Treatment, however, learned about Tamiflu before the public and were advised about the benefits of having it available to prevent a flu virus infection.

A stark illustration of the failure of doctors to recognize the value of life-saving medical breakthroughs was a study showing that the drug cimetidine improved survival odds in a group of colon cancer patients.40 In this landmark study, patients with an aggressive form of colon cancer took 800 mg of cimetidine for one year after surgery. After ten years, there was nearly a 60% improvement in survival in the group that took cimetidine.
As early as 1985, the Life Extension Foundation recommended cimetidine as an adjuvant cancer therapy. If you had been a Life Extension member and contracted colon cancer, your odds of dying could have been reduced dramatically.

Many colon cancer patients learned about the enormous value of cimetidine in the year 2003 edition ofDisease Prevention and Treatment. The brand new 2014 edition of Disease Prevention and Treatment provides even more novel therapies for colon cancer patients to consider.

For those afflicted with chronic illnesses, the new information contained in the 2014 edition of Disease Prevention and Treatment could result in a liberating experience. When a medical concern arises, you don’t want to be left in the darkness of scientific ignorance.

By keeping the latest edition of Disease Prevention and Treatment close by, you will quickly be able to use the expanded index to educate yourself about novel therapies that have shown efficacy in peer-reviewed studies, but have not yet made it into conventional medical practice.

Meet the Author

Starting in the 1970s, the founders of a non-profit group called the Life Extension Foundation began to uncover information that could be used to improve patient outcomes and, in many cases, prevent people from dying prematurely. Conveying this data to those with health problems often resulted in significant improvements in their condition.

Since then, the Life Extension Foundation has identified enormous amounts of evidence indicating that effective, but overlooked approaches already exist to mitigate many of today’s lethal diseases. This abundance of new scientific findings has created the need to publish an updated edition of our Disease Prevention and Treatment reference book. The Life Extension Foundation has spent tens of thousands of hours reviewing the scientific literature in order to develop the novel approaches to disease prevention and treatment in this book.

It is almost impossible not to be on the edge of anger when reading statements like this one: “A surprising number of effective therapies are already available to better treat the diseases of aging. In the treatment of many cancers, for instance, the proper use of the drugs metformin, aspirin, and cimetidine markedly improves clinical outcomes.” Why are we not being told of optional treatments that are available and why are those treatments not approved? Disease Prevention and Treatment by Life Extension attempts to answer this question to a point, but is mostly concerned with imparting the lifesaving information from alternative treatments, cures and prevention from around the world. The most debilitating diseases can be prevented, treated or even cured by numerous methods that do not yet have FDA approval and are often disregarded by busy health care providers who continue to treat their patients using the “traditional and accepted” approaches. This volume is an excellent reference for those who are looking for answers to extend their lives beyond the ravages of not only the illnesses, but often times the side effects of the medications being used to treat them.

It is becoming more and more evident that we are each going to have to take complete responsibility for our own health care. The scientific staff of Life Extension has done their homework when it comes to gathering the information contained in Disease Prevention and Treatment. The sheer volume of 132 treatments that are included in this book are a testimony to their efforts and the editorial staff has done an excellent job of putting it all together for the public. Used as a quick reference guide for possible treatment options that your doctor isn’t likely to suggest and which have not been approved by the FDA, this book will enable a person to tend to their own treatment and actually extend their longevity in spite of the political and economic factors that have prevented these treatments to be made commonly available. Gone are the days when the health of the patient was the foremost concern of medical care, however, with Disease Prevention and Treatment in hand, you can find treatments and cures for diseases and illnesses which have been dubbed “incurable.”

    ¿Disease Prevention and Treatment: 130 Evidence-Based Protocols

“Disease Prevention and Treatment: 130 Evidence-Based Protocols to Combat the Diseases of Aging” is a very comprehensive and scholarly record of information pertinent to anybody and everybody who ever has had, or ever will have, any of 130 commonly encountered disorders associated with the aging process. Produced by the Life Extension Foundation, this 5th Edition has been edited by Blake Gossard.

Since 1980, the Life Extension Foundation has been actively involved in efforts to streamline the FDA drug approval process. In that time the Foundation has invested millions of dollars to review thousands of studies which identify many, many vitamins and supplements capable of ameliorating the effects of aging. Of the 130 age-related conditions discussed herein, essentially every one of them is actually a symptom of vitamin and/or supplement deficiencies.

The purpose of this tome is to provide the general public access to this information, so individuals can take charge of their own healthcare needs by anticipating various age-related conditions, and subsequently take preventive measures to ensure their bodies do not become deficient in the critical chemicals responsible for those conditions. Topics covered run the gamut from the common cold to various cancers, all of which you can alleviate to varying degrees simply by making certain your body has what it needs to stave off those disorders.

Out of 130 conditions treated in this tome, I identified over 30 which I personally either already have, or may develop as I age. I must admit I was extremely impressed with what I read about those conditions. My initial reaction was surprise that of the numerous vitamins and supplements known to abate those 30+ conditions, I have already been taking many on a daily basis. Indeed, I have recently experienced a measurable improvement in my kidneys’ periodic lab results, which can only be explained as being a direct consequence of taking various supplements and/or vitamins, as I have done for many years. This book validated my own findings from research I had reviewed, supporting the benefits of taking specific vitamins and supplements.

“Disease Prevention and Treatment” is an invaluable treasure trove of essential information which can quite literally extend your life. The thousands of studies from which this information has been gleaned are cited extensively throughout the book. The 1408 pages overflow with down-to-earth, proven and documented information to help you enhance and extend your life. What’s not to like? I recommend this book as being perhaps the single most significant thing you can purchase to improve your health.
