Now in its third edition, this Manual, containing complete information on hundreds of disorders, is still a "must have" reference for every nurse. In a concise format, this handbook allows nurses and students to find - and understand - information on disorders so they can effectively plan nursing care. Offering a clear but comprehensive discussion of pathophysiology, and providing rationales in the medications and laboratory sections, Diseases and Disorders will help nurses to understand the scientific basis for the nursing care patients need. It is an excellent reference for nurses working in community and clinical settings and students transitioning from classroom to clinical settings.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Phyllis Murray
This manual of nursing therapeutics covers a wide range of conditions, providing a concise review of each disorder, developmental considerations, and nursing process activities. It aims to provide ""distilled"" and ""cutting-edge"" information that is practicable in fast-paced modern healthcare. Intended for nursing students and staff, it could serve a broad scope of practice venues. Clear print and tables enhance the presentation of data. The absence of graphics is no deterrent. The table of contents is alphabetical for convenience and the index is well-detailed. LOS, DRG's, and descriptors follow the disease title. Nursing assessment includes history, physical exam, diagnostic tests, and nursing diagnoses. Planning/Implementations describe collaborative and independent role functions. Outcome measures are specific for clinical, documentation, and discharge/home health concerns. This is a great text for students, generalist staff nurses, or others who work with a broad range of client ages and conditions in clinics, offices, communities, and acute care. The topics of Guillain-Barre, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, hypothyroidism, fat embolus, and pulmonary fibrosis are excellent. Medications for Alzheimer's and glaucoma fail the ""cutting edge"" criteria. Also missing in glaucoma is low pressure disease and the higher African-American risk. Overall, I recommend the book as an excellent quick refresher for conditions not encountered frequently because it will stimulate safe and comprehensive care.

Reviewer: Carole Ann Kenner, PhD, RN, FAAN (The College of New Jersey)
Description: This manual is a quick reference for common diseases and treatment modalities from a nursing perspective. The previous edition published in 1997 lacked the emphasis on evidence-based practice, gender-specific content, and normal and abnormal laboratory values. All of these are welcome additions to bring the text up-to-date. The authors point out the change from hospital based to community based nursing and provide information from hospital to home.
Purpose: The aim of this manual is to provide a quick source of information for nurses in the practice arena. This is a very worthy objective and it met.
Audience: The target audience is two-fold: students and practicing nurses. The authors are well known in the field of nursing education. Each is still very much tied to the clinical area and bring reality to the book.
Features: The manual represents an up-to-date quick reference for the most common disorders a practicing nurse will find today. Use of gender and life span considerations widens its application. The book presents material in an easy to use format. It moves from the DRG, length of stay, and description through a brief description, etiologies, and then application of the nursing process. Included are guidelines for documentation. Emphasis on evidence-based practice is threaded throughout. Inclusion of DRG and length of stay together are unique for nursing books, but have been used in medical literature for quite a while. The use of box features to call attention to key points is a good educational tool. The contributors represent educators and practicing nurses from all specialities. The shortcomings are few, but the content would be strengthened with the addition of more genetic linkages in the etiology and history taking portions of the book. End of life and palliative care measures should be included when appropriate. Disease entites that are common to women that appear to be lacking are fibromyalgia, which is not even mentioned, along with chronic fatigue and mitral valve prolapse. Few pediatric conditions are included but those that are are done well.
Assessment: This book does not really have any true competition. Its presentation is much more user friendly than the average diagnostic or disease oriented books of the past. It brings the nursing content up to a level of most quick reference medical books, something necessary for the average practicing nurse today. Emphasis is still clearly on nursing but the material includes information to assist with financial considerations that most nurses have only recently had to think about. This edition is a definite improvement from the past one. Scientific rationale presented briefly enough helps the nurse glide through the material and apply it quickly in the fast paced clinical environment. The authors are to be commended for their attention to detail and up-to-date material.
