Reviewer: Brenda Canning, BS (Univ of Illinois at Chicago Coll of Associated Health Professions)
Description: The book provides an introduction to the disease process and basic information on common diseases of the human body. Diseases are largely organized by systems of the body. They are described in terms of common characteristics, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment, prognosis, and prevention.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide clear and accessible information on common diseases of the human body. The focus is on diseases that are commonly diagnosed and treated in the medical office or clinical setting.
Audience: The book is targeted for allied health care providers and other medical office personnel. Many of the case study questions at the end of the chapters are written from the point of view of the medical assistant.
Features: Several illustrations of the structures of the human body are included in the front section of the book. These are clear and easy to reference. There is a glossary of medical terms that will be handy for the student. The appendix of diagnostic procedures will serve as an appropriate reference for any person working in a medical setting. Other features include appendixes of associations concerned with diseases of the human body and normal reference laboratory values.
Assessment: This book provides essential information on many common diseases. Most entries are covered in one page or less. The information is presented in a clear, logical, organized fashion. The book is easy to read and reference.
