Overview

Clinics in Developmental Medicine No. 252

  • The premier textbook of clinical child neurology
  • Comprehensive descriptions of the neurological disorders of the neonate, infant, child and adolescent
  • Third edition comprehensively revised and updated

Diseases of the nervous system in infancy and childhood have a profound impact on the lives of patients and their families and are probably the most disruptive of all paediatric ailments. Aicardi's Diseases of the Nervous System in Childhood is thus the essential resource for child neurologists, neurologists, paediatricians, and physicians in developmental medicine. The third edition has been extensively updated to incorporate the tremendous volume of new information since the previous edition, but remains as clinically oriented as its predecessors. Because of the enormous and wide-ranging amount of new material available, Aicardi and his co-editors have been joined by an eminent team of international experts who have contributed many of the chapters.

Reviews of the second edition

"This book is one of the best of its kind and, as with the first edition, will continue to take first place on the shelf of all paediatric neurologists. It is also highly readable, and will remain the 'friendly companion at the bedside' that Professor Aicardi aims for."
from a review in Journal of Neurology

"This text is an excellent investment for any paediatric department as a bench book: trainees will rely on it for postgraduate examinations and many physicians in general and neurological practice of children and adults will covet the copy that is now at my right hand."
from a review in Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Reviewer: Kevin Chapman, MD (Barrow Neurological Institute)
Description: Dr. Aicardi has updated his comprehensive and authoritative book on pediatric neurology, covering a wide variety of neurologic diseases seen in neonates through adolescence. The previous edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: The purpose is to critically distill the ever-expanding volume of information about pediatric neurology into a useful reference for clinicians. The editor notes in the preface that there is a significant increase in the amount of available information that is not always critically reviewed or clinically relevant. He succeeds in his goal of providing clinicians with useful knowledge that they can apply in the daily clinical setting.
Audience: This should have a wide appeal to those who care for pediatric patients including medical students, residents, neuropsychologists, pediatricians, and pediatric neurologists. Dr. Aicardi is a leading expert in pediatric neurology.
Features: The book covers neurologic disease from the neonatal period through adolescence, including chapters on each of the major issues encountered by clinicians in practice. Extensive chapters cover metabolic diseases, epilepsy, and central nervous system malformations. Detailed, clear images accompany the text, while an extensive reference list is provided for more detailed information. The extensive use of tables helps users quickly expand their differential diagnosis when encountering an unusual patient in clinic.
Assessment: This continues to set a high standard for other pediatric neurology textbooks to emulate. Clinicians will find this book useful in clinical practice and for the education of residents and medical students. While there are more detailed books about various specialty areas in child neurology, this one succeeds as a comprehensive, single-volume general pediatric neurology reference. Over the last decade, significant changes have occurred in our understanding of neurologic disease and its treatment. This is reflected in this edition and should encourage those who have found this book useful to update to the newer edition.
Harvey B. Sarnat
The author is one of perhaps ten pediatric neurologists whose name brings instant recognition and admiration throughout the world as well as in his native France. This book is based upon his lifetime career of experience and careful observations in the broad discipline of child neurology and is single-authored except for three of 30 chapters in which he has invited colleagues to contribute parts. It is a well written and clear general textbook. The purpose is to provide clinicians with a clinical perspective of neurological diseases of childhood, and may be read as a text or used as a reference for particular disorders. The audience would include both pediatric neurologists and general pediatricians. The 30 chapters are divided into 11 sections organized into traditional categories such as paroxysmal disorders, neuromuscular diseases, and fetal and neonatal neurology. There is a long section on psychiatric, behavioral, and developmental (in the clinical sense) disorders. The book is written by a master clinician for clinicians. There is a comprehensive and detailed index and extensive references at the end of each chapter. It is well illustrated with CT and MRI images that are reproduced large enough to visualize details, and it also contains selected clear tables of comparative data. Only a few illustrations of pathological findings are included. The author is clear to not misrepresent speculation as fact in the text. In comparing this textbook with the classical pediatric neurology texts by Menkes, Textbook of Child Neurology, 5th Edition (Williams & Wilkins, 1995), Swaiman, Pediatric Neurology: Principles and Practice, 2ndEdition (Mosby-Year Book, 1994), and Berg, Child Neurology: A Clinical Manual, 2nd Edition (JB Lippincott, 1994), this book devotes relatively little space to basic neuroscience, animal models, and detailed discussions of pathogenesis in terms of basic neurophysiology and biochemistry. However, the author's purpose was to write a practical clinical textbook for clinicians and he is faithful to his goal. I was a little disappointed to see scant coverage of the recent molecular genetic data on the programming of neuroembryological development, but this omission is intentional to preserve the strong clinical flavor of the text. In sum, I feel that the author has set out clear objectives and has met them well, sharing his great breadth and depth of knowledge and logical thought patterns with us in writing and communicating them well. I recommend this book to general pediatricians as well as to neurologists.
