Overview

It's supposed to be a happy day at the Magic Kingdom—the return of the teenaged holographic hosts. But things go very wrong when a sudden lightning storm disrupts the celebration, and Amanda's mysterious sister, Jez, disappears. The only clue is the sighting of a wild monkey in the Magic Kingdom during the storm. The mystery deepens as Finn is contacted by Wayne, an old man he hasn't heard from in months. Wayne tells Finn that there's trouble at the Animal Kingdom: the evil Overtakers have gained control of one of the computer servers that will be used to operate Daylight Holographic Imaging there. That means that if any of the holographic hosts fall asleep, they will go into comas—permanently.

Filled with action and brimming with the same meticulous detail as The Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark, this second book in the series—The Rise of Chernabog—is the result of hands-on research behind the scenes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. Young and older readers alike will get a glimpse into a second Disney kingdom. The wild rides have only just begun; and the clock is ticking. How long can the teens keep themselves awake in their quest to find their friend—and what happens if they fail?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
"Lightning crashed on the horizon. A breeze swirled around the Cast Members. The air tasted dusty, almost bitter, with electrical charge." This ominous tempest sets the stage for Disney at Dawn, an exciting Kingdom Keepers series number that includes tales of Magic Kingdom mischief, a mysterious disappearance, and a dastardly computer takeover. Wild monkeys and wilder rides.

Meet the Author

Ridley Pearson
Ridley Pearson

Ridley Pearson is the author of more than two dozen novels, including the New York Times bestsellers Killer Summer, Killer View and Killer Weekend, the bestselling Lou Boldt crime series, and many books for young readers. He lives with his wife and two daughters, dividing his time between St. Louis, Missouri, and Hailey, Idaho.

Biography

Crime may not always pay, but crime fiction always sells, and Ridley Pearson is one of the stars of the genre, the kind of writer whose royalties keep his family fed and cover a few extras as well (like, say, his own airplane). Yet Pearson didn't spend his youth dreaming of bestsellerdom. His first ambition was to be a musician, and he spent most of his twenties writing and performing folk-rock songs. The idea that he might become a novelist came later. As he explained in a Barnes and Noble interview, he was reading a Robert Ludlum novel when "a voice spoke up from inside me and said, 'I can do this.'" (Once he began writing and discovered firsthand the skill involved in crafting a cohesive thriller, he realized how much he had presumed!)

Pearson is renowned for fast-paced, thrill-a-minute suspense novels that include "a rare humanism and attention to detail" (Publishers Weekly). In a Greenwich Magazine interview he called his work "aerobic fiction, because I hope to get your heart pounding and get you turning pages." Entertainment Weekly dubbed him "the thinking person's Robert Ludlum."

As his fans know, Pearson works hard at nailing the details of forensic investigation and police procedure. In Undercurrents (the first novel in his Seattle-based Lou Boldt mystery series) his research was so thorough—he consulted an expert in oceanography—that the book helped convict an actual murderer. A Washington state prosecuting attorney happened to be reading it while working on a case similar to Pearson's fictional one: A woman's body had been found in a bay, and at first it appeared that she had committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. The oceanographer mentioned in Pearson's acknowledgments was called in as an expert witness to help prove that, based on tidal currents, the woman must have been dead before the time her husband claimed to have last seen her. Due largely to the expert testimony, the victim's husband was convicted of second-degree murder.

Of course, there's more to a Pearson novel than research. "Just what is it about Ridley Pearson that makes him the best damn thriller writer on the planet?" mused Bill Ott in BookList. "We've celebrated the forensic detail, the taut plotting, the multidimensional characters, and the screw-tightening suspense, but lots of fiction writers do all that. Here's a theory: Pearson is a master at manipulating opposites. His stories are forever jumping from high concept to small scale, from positive to negative charges, manipulating our emotions and minds with their polar hip-hopping."

When he's not writing, Pearson still makes music—he's the bass guitarist for the Rock Bottom Remainders, an amateur rock band made up of professional writers including Stephen King, Dave Barry, Amy Tan, and Mitch Albom (the group's motto, coined by Barry: "We play music as well as Metallica writes novels").

It was while Pearson was in Miami to play with the Rock Bottom Remainders that he told Barry about his idea (actually, daughter Paige's idea) for a prequel to Peter Pan. The two authors had such a good time hashing out possibilities over breakfast that Pearson asked Barry to write the book with him. Published in 2004, their clever collaboration Peter and the Starcatchers became a huge bestseller, spawning two sequels (Peter and the Shadow Thieves in 2006 and Peter and the Secret of Rundoon in 2007) and a series of spin-off children's chapter books.

Even though Pearson thoroughly enjoys crafting juvenile fiction, his adult fans need not worry that he's abandoned his high-voltage crime novels. Indeed, he has said that writing gives him the same "adrenaline rush," no matter which audience he is targeting: Readers of all ages appreciate the imagination, suspense, and an impeccable eye for detail he brings to all his fiction.

Good To Know

Pearson calls himself a workaholic, "not so much by desire as out of necessity," since he reserves a lot of time for his two young daughters. His hobbies, which he now defines as "something you once did and no longer have the time for," include recreational tree climbing, fly-fishing, backyard volleyball, snow boarding—and, of course, bass guitar in his rock band. An avid reviser, Pearson says, "I'm said to have a nervous, worrying disposition, but rarely feel I live up to that description—perhaps internal calm is expressed as external nervosa."

Pearson loves to travel, especially to southern France, with wife Marcelle and second child Storey, who is adopted from China. We're certain to do a good deal of international travel in the years to come. He also attends local symphony and theater. But his "favorite avocation is to spend an evening around our dining table with two or three other couples. This, I feel, is where many of the world's ills are solved, and many souls restored. Mine, especially."

    I Also Recommend:

    A Disney fan must read.

This book is excellent! I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this series (Kingdom Keepers 1 & 2) to any Disney fan. It gives you incite into the "other" side of Disney, (the behind the scenes stuff). The story is suspenceful and riveting. The characters were likeable and excellently written. It is clear the book is carefully researched, giving lots of details that a true Disney fan would know but would be new to others. There are a few chapters that were very suspenseful but no graphic violence. I would recommend this to 5th graders on up to adults. It was an enjoyable book and I passed it on to my friends.

Just as good as the first

When I read the first Kingdom Keepers, I was immediately hooked. I was so happy to find out that there was a sequel. Just like the first book, The Kingdom Keepers 2 has action right in the first chapter, leading all the way to the jaw-dropping last chapter. This book, unlike the first, takes place in Animal Kingdom. Animals become maddness; some are holograms, Overtakers, that are working to stop the five DHI's (13-year old kids; the Kingdom Keepers) from figuring out yet another mystery and stopping the Overtakers from ruling. The entire book has mysteries and sharp turns on every page. At one point, I had been thinking in one direction and ended up being wrong when I finally got to the revealing point. The ending of the book is absolutely amazing, and it leaves you hanging. I'm dying to grab a holb of the third book already! Even if you're not a huge Disney lover, like me, you'll still love this book. :)

    Great Sequel!

Imagine that you are in Disney World and it's after closing. It's like a dream come true! Or a nightmare if you're Finn Whitman and his group of DHI (Disney Host Ineractive) friends. After their last episode (Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark), the DHIs are returning to the Magic Kingdom. During a parade celebrating their return, Finn notices two girls in the crowd. It's Amanda and Jez. He's happy to see them, but they don't look so happy.

During the middle of the parade, funny things start to happen. It appears that the Overtakers are back and they aren't going down so easily this time. It's a race against time and the kids seem to be on their own for the majority of this adventure. Can they save the park and themselves?

Kingdom Keepers II was a lot better than the first one. The best part is, Mr. Pearson left the ending open for a third book in the series, and I cannot wait to get a copy in my hands. Be forewarned this series needs to be read in order.

It will keep you on your toes!

The genre of Kingdome Keepers 2 is fantasy. I would say it is fantasy because of the characters' DHI's (Disney Hologram Interactive) in real life there are no holograms. The setting is the first thing a person would find out, because of the cover. The cover has Cinderella's castle which automatically gives it away, Disney World! In the story there are five main characters including, Finn, Charlene, Philby, Terry, and Maybeck. The main conflict is that there is a strange balloon floating above Cinderella's Castle so everybody decide to go and investigate. On their way they encounter some tricky decisions that you will have to find out yourself. I think this book is real thinker, meaning that, you have to think about some events and make them your own. I say this because I thought about certain things to make them make sense to me. I think people that enjoy Disney and/or the topic of Disney should read this book. I also think that those people should be in the age range of 10-15 years because there are some difficult topics and hard words for younger ages, but on the other hand older people probably would not have any interest in the plot or characters.

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was the BEST! It was just as good as the first.I heard about these books on t.v. I wasn't sure they'd be that good. I got them for Christmas last year and found I couldn't put them down!!! These might be the best books in the universe.I recommend these and all other of Ridley Pearson's books to you. They are great books. The only thing is that people who don't know much about Disney might not know what they're talking about in the book sometimes. Also, there are a few errors in the book. For example, In the first book, Finn said that Amanda and Jez were almost identical, and in the second book he said that they looked completely different. Other than that, you should read this book!!!!

Kingdom Keepers 2 was litteraly the best book I've ever read besides Harry Potter, it's thrilling, easy, and a great book to read, I could barely put the book down while reading, if you thought the first was OK and had a lot of errors, I didn't find one error and this book is WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY better than the first. Buy read it, and read it again, it is SOOO worth the money and the time.
