Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
Disney presents a comprehensive encyclopedia for preschool children. This will be an especially attractive book for parents who are eager to teach their children even before they start school. Also it will be a welcome asset for the curious child who asks endless questions. An inquisitive child has only to see an animal and then the questions begin. Parents can reach for the book, turn to the easy to use index and be ready to share information. Mickey Mouse and his pals assist the reader to explore wonders of nature. Water is one element of our world that includes far-reaching topics for a junior encyclopedia to cover. Amazed at the constant, eternal crashing waves, even adults wonder where does the water come from? Where is it going? Clever remarks will catch the kid's attention. For instance, mountain climbing has its ups and downs, tarantulas are a hair-raising insect, I don't see (sea) any otters, the owl is a real hoot, and how does a sea horse wear a saddle? Billed as containing 289 facts, everyone will learn new ones: The ostrich says, "Who cares if I can't fly. I can run 40 miles an hour." This encyclopedia is filled with surprises including: sharks lived 100 million years before dinosaurs; if an octopus loses an arm, it can grow another; ants carry objects 20 times their size; and if the Earth were the size of a pinhead, the sun would be the size of a soccer ball. Bright, beautiful character art, plus unbelievable photographs extend a small child's learning, in addition to well-placed Little Einsteins Fact Pages. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
