Overview

You don't need to be a Sorcerer's Apprentice to know that one of the secrets of Disney's film magic lies in the power of their soundtracks. More than just terrific parent-friendly kid stuff, the sophisticated songs that help animate Disney's classic movies are magnificent additions to the Great American Songbook. Disney's Greatest, Vol. 1 raids the archives for 20 classic tunes -- written by the theatrical likes of Sammy Cahn, Elton John, Tim Rice, and Richard and Robert Sherman -- moving back in time from 1999's Tarzan opus, the Phil Collins-penned "Strangers like Me," to 1940's Pinocchio, which spawned the Oscar-winning classic "When You Wish Upon a Star." Oscar winners, it turns out, abound here. There's "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" from Song of the South, "A Whole New World" from Aladdin, and "Beauty and the Beast" from the film of the same name. Plenty of other classics, however, deserve awards of their own, including Louis Prima's sensational "I Wan'na Be like You (The Monkey Song)" from Jungle Book and "Heigh-Ho" from Snow White. By offering only one song per film, this collection may not suffice for Disney devotees who want to hear all the hits. For example, The Lion King's "Circle of Life" is here, but "Hakuna Matata" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are not. And while the disc is truly blessed with Julie Andrews's wonderful "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from Mary Poppins, "Chim Chim Cher-ee" is missing. Thankfully, Disney is well aware of their embarrassment of riches and has included some of these, along with a host of others, on the simultaneously released Disney's Greatest, Vol. 2.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Disney's Greatest Hits Vol. 1 delivers over an hour of favorite songs from films like Tarzan, Toy Story, Peter Pan, Lady & the Tramp, and more. Original recordings of classics like "Bibbidi-Bobidi-boo," "Cruella De Vil," "Heigh Ho," and "When You Wish Upon a Star" mix with contemporary favorites such as "You've Got a Friend in Me," "Kiss the Girl," "A Whole New World," and "Beauty and the Beast." The collection puts the newer songs at the beginning -- probably to immediately capture the attention of young listeners -- but it would have been interesting to hear Disney's old and new songs mixed together. Though it's not spectacularly different from the other compilations Disney has released, Disney's Greatest, Vol. 1 is a thoroughly enjoyable collection of classic, instantly recognizable songs for Disney fans of all ages.

This CD is worth having in your collection. They take the songs strait out of the movie just as you would hear them. Their is none of the dumb ear quencing pop music trying to be sung by stars like Hillary Duff. You dont have to go throw the teen pop road reck. This is the best Disney music, music at its best.

My niece bought this CD and played it in my car. It was very enjoyable listening. It's nice to find a musical venue that we can share. We're usually worlds apart in that area. Disney composers are great!
