Overview

Aptly subtitled "Gentle Instrumental Favorites for Baby," this soft-focus album delivers exactly that, along with some general but potentially helpful sleep tips in the liner notes written by clinical psychologist Dr. Jodi Mindell. Disney's Lullaby Album features well-known nighttime melodies along with Disney's own lullaby standards, delivered via piano, guitar, strings, and other non-jarring instruments. While the overall effect at times threatens to bleed into Muzak territory, it certainly accomplishes its primary goal: to soothe your little one to dreamland. Included here are such classics as "Brahms' Lullaby" (with a dollop of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" tossed in for good measure) and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," pop offerings like the Everly Brothers' "(All I Have to Do Is) Dream," and Disney favorites such as the ever-endearing "Baby Mine" (from Dumbo) and "When You Wish Upon a Star" (from Pinocchio). One thing is certain: If this collection doesn't lull your baby -- and likely the rest of your household - to sleep, nothing will.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jonathan Widran
This gentle, lilting thematic CD of soft-spoken piano and acoustic guitar-based melodies proves that the folks at Disney are not simply concerned with getting your child to coerce you to spend money -- they actually care about the health and welfare of your child! While you listen to Fred Mollins' tender and lush arrangements of pieces like "Brahm's Lullaby," "What a Wonderful World," and "Someone to Watch Over Me," you can read the simple liner notes (written by Jodi A. Mindell, Associate Professor of Psychology at St. Joseph's University) that advise parents on infant sleeping tips, bedtime routines, and the best time to let your baby fall asleep on his or her own. Aside from the classics and a softhearted take on Paul McCartney's "I Will," Mollins borrows from some previous Disney product: Kenny Loggins' House at Pooh Corner and the Sherman Brothers' "Stay Awake/Feed the Birds." This is not a recording to listen to for anything but relaxation and for lulling your child to sleep. Yet don't be surprised if you sit alongside the crib listening and find yourself drifting off to a happy Never Neverland yourself.

This is a well-done selection of familiar songs, lovingly produced in a rich, thoughtful, gentle manner. The feeling and mood of each selection is amplified by the instruments and arrangements used, and the effect is very soothing on babies and parents alike! Our 1-year-old daughter Caroline has listened to this album nearly every night since she came home from the hospital. It was a gift from an experienced Mom, and it¿s our baby¿s favorite of all. She asks for it if we don¿t put it on at bedtime! I even find myself humming some of the tunes myself during the day. Unlike other albums we have purchased, all these selections start softly, and don¿t contain jarring passages that can wake a restless baby up again. It may seem a bit bland at first, especially contrasted with the forcefulness of much modern music. But a little something new can be noticed every time the album is played, and your appreciation of it will increase. It will definitely force you to slow down and relax, if you let it do its work. You can put the entire CD on and let it go- by the end, baby is happily asleep. And you will be too, if you lie down for a minute! As a musician myself, I appreciate the many nuances and tasteful touches used in the arrangements, giving somewhat a classical, orchestral feeling to simple, memorable melodies. Your baby is getting a good musical education while enjoying a soothing rest. You won¿t go wrong purchasing this album if you want something soft and gentle while still offering solid musical value.

We received this CD as a gift at our daughter's shower, and we have listened to it every night for 14 months. It has become a rhythmic way for the family to get to sleep, and I highly recommend this selection for new parents that may want a soothing CD to pop in when it is nap time...or sleep time. This would also make a wonderful shower present for an expecting couple.

This is one of the most relaxing CDs I've ever come across. Both of my children (5 yrs and 2 yrs) have it in their rooms to go to sleep with, and so do I. I always include it in baby shower gifts. A must have for new (and old) moms.

I bought this when my daughter was about a year old and having trouble getting to sleep at night. It is very soothing instrumental music. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a way to calm their baby down for nap time or bedtime.
