Meet the Author

John Hughes has been an endurance cyclist since 1975, spending 15 of those years as a coach and trainer. For 12 years he served as the managing director of the UltraMarathon Cycling Association (UMCA), the founding organization of the transcontinental Race Across America (RAAM). As UMCA director, Hughes developed the popular century challenge, encouraging cyclists to ride 100 miles every month.

Hughes has twice competed in RAAM and has twice won the Furnace Creek 508, a 508-mile RAAM qualifying event. Among his other accomplishments are seven 1,200-kilometer randonnées, including a course record for the Boston-Montreal-Boston route. For 10 years Hughes organized and led supported tours of the West and Southwest. He also explored the West on self-supported tours on a loaded touring bike.

Hughes has been certified as a USA Cycling sport coach and a National Strength and Conditioning Association personal trainer. Hughes has coached numerous riders, from people preparing for their first centuries to dozens of top RAAM finishers. He lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Dan Kehlenbach has been coaching cyclists and other endurance athletes since 1995. He has certifications through USA Cycling as a level 2 coach and the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). He earned his master’s degree in sports medicine from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama.

Kehlenbach spent four years with the U.S. Coast Guard, serving as the strength and conditioning instructor for the recruit training program in Cape May, New Jersey. He also represented the Coast Guard in cycling races, duathlons, triathlons, and running events.

As a contributing editor for UltraCycling, the official magazine of the UMCA, Kehlenbach wrote numerous articles on training and conditioning, specializing in articles that demystify the complexities of sport science.

    Highly recommend! A must read.

Leaves nothing out! Even experienced Long Distance cyclists who do most of the things explained in this book will be reminded why they are doing them. This is now my "go to" reference for every aspect of my training to the point of taking the book with me to have for pre-day event prep. Practical, easy to understand and applicable to every level of cycling.

    Highly Recommended -A Must Read!

"I have been racing competitively and training as an amateur ultra cyclist for more than 25 years. During this time I have raced in all types of competitions/events with the distances ranging from 12/24 hour, 500+ milers, to particiapting in the ultimate ultra event, the Race Across America (RAAM) 5 times. I spend a lot of time on my bike training and racing. Naturally, I thought I had it all figured out, including my bike fit and position, nutrition, training cycles, conditioning, injury prevention, etc. John Hughes and "Distance Cycling" however, clearly showed me where I could improve in all these areas listed. Being an avid student/participant of ultra cycling, I have obtained all the available materials on this subject matter. "Distance Cycling" clearly offers a one stop, go to source that will answer all your distance cycling questions. It is offered in a concise, clear cut, well thought out book. I have known John Hughes the author, coach, and competitor for several years. He has competed in numerous ultra events himself, coached some of the best in our sport, and is truely a leading "expert" in this field. Look no further..."Distance Cycling" is a must read." Rob Morlock - RAAM/Ultra Athlete

I am writing this review as one who is relatively new to long distance riding. I began seriously in April of 2012, riding the first of the Boston Brevet Series, a 100K ride. While I quickly became hooked, I had no experience with this new way of riding. Over the next few months I worked through the series, successfully completing the 200, 300, 400 and 600K rides. It was an exciting time with much learning and many, many questions.

As a 64 year old rider I knew I needed to learn how to ride more efficiently and to deal well with nutrition and training. As I worked my way through the Brevet Series I began looking online for answers. Coach John Hughes’ name kept coming up. I’d print his articles, study them and apply the learnings on the next ride. Upon hearing of Distance Cycling I knew from studying John’s past articles that the answers to many of my questions would be found in this one book. I have not been disappointed.

It is comprehensive, covering all of the relevant topics of distancing riding. It is written in a logical and understandable way and is based on John’s many years of experience. As one who owns’ a business I especially appreciate the emphasis on planning and training schedules as a way to get organized. One thing I love about the recommended exercises in this book is that they can be done at home with relatively little equipment.

This winter I will be focusing on his chapter on Baseline Conditioning as a way to increase core strength and remain limber for the next riding season. In personal communications with John I have learned that he is exceptionally generous. Distance Cycling embodies this generosity.

If you are a long distance rider or considering becoming one this book will help you at every turn-I heartily recommend it!

If you want to learn the tricks of the trade for distance cyclin

If you want to learn the tricks of the trade for distance cycling than this is the book for you. I ordered and read the kindle version and recieved a hardcopy when I hired John Hughes to prepare me for my coast to coast ride across america. The book covers all aspects from nutrition to stretching and strengthing for 100 mile rides to multi-day events. The biggest thing I learned besides riding many miles is the need for off the bike work. All I wanted to do is ride and this book opened my eyes for the need to have a solid core that will help me climb the mountain passes on my ride. This book details what you need to do.

I ride a mountain bike for fun with my husband. I decided that I want to ride on the road with him and I have my mom's road bike. The book is great because it gives me a way to learn on my own not only about conditioning but also about technique and how to ride safely, clothing and equipment for woman as well as men and what to eat and drink during rides.!
