Overview

Juan De Marcos Gonzalez's All Stars are the multigenerational sister act to the BVSC, employing many of the Club's stars but also making room for Cuba's younger masters. This time out, the title claims new and different, but if you like the All Stars' initial foray into the big band sound of vintage Cuban dance music, there's just as much here to love. With a sound more upfront and modern than the BVSC's aged patina, the All Stars deliver hard charging mambos and descargas which make for a more muscular counterpart to the Social Club's genteel son. This is dance music as it was played in the casinos of Swinging Havana on the eve of the Revolution, lush with flutes, saxophones, piano, and strings.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Earl Simmons
Introduced into a completely different climate for Latin music compared to the Afro-Cuban All Stars' 1997 debut, Distinto Diferente undoubtedly benefits from the increased commercial and artistic attention given to Afro-Cuban music in the wake of the Buena Vista Social Club (which includes many of the same members). Leader Juan de Marcos González gave Distinto Diferente a similar angle to Buena Vista, but concentrates more on the hot dance music Cuba's been known for since its 1930s and '40s boom for American vacationers. The two best-known members of Buena Vista Social Club, Ibrahim Ferrer and Rubén González, also appear here.
