Divaby Annie Lennox
Dave who? After almost a decade sharing the spotlight with Dave Stewart in the Eurythmics -- and thus subjecting herself to assumptions that he was the brains and she was merely the voice and beauty of the band -- Annie Lennox made a powerful statement of individuality on her 1992 solo debut, Diva. The first two tracks typify the range of this recording: "Why" is a sumptuous ballad with lyrics that border on overwrought, while "Walking on Broken Glass" is infectious and peppy. Lennox brings a passionate sense of drama to the first, a lighthearted glee to the latter, and makes almost everything in between work too. In doing so, she proves that pop sensibilities don't have to be one-dimensional or simple. Diva was both a commercial and critical success, establishing Lennox as an important artist in her own right.

Long time Annie Lenox fan - this is one of her best, click on ''cold''
Lennox's solo debut, Diva, was a huge smash in 1992. I bought it just last week, and I have to admit I love it! Here's how I rate these songs-- Why-5/5. A beautiful song Walking On Broken Glass-5/5. Great song done in wonderful style by Ms. Lennox. Precious-1/5. I usually skip over this one Legend-5/5. Love it! Cold-5/5. Very pretty and soulful Money-5/5. This one rocks! Little Bird-5/5. Sounds a lot like "Pavement Cracks" on her new album, "Bare." Primitive-5/5. Great song! Stay By Me-4/5. Pretty good, but a little repetitive. The Gift-5/5. Very nice. Bonus Track-Very cool how she dubs it to make it sound old. Overall, an excellent album. Buy it!
I bought this when it first came out years ago. There was some bitterness about seeing her going solo. "Why," needs no explanation. It's just the perfect relationship song no matter what. Admittedly, on the first listen (on cassette, no less), I thought there were a ton of ballads...too many. So glad it was on cassette because to get to the more upbeat songs I had to listen to the others. There's something for every and all stages of life...you know, the big issues. Relationships, self, loss, discovery, and - ultimately (on the cd) - enjoying the heck out of whatever and wherever you are. Got a really deep crush on someone? "Cold," just NAILS everything you're feeling. I think "Cold" might hold the most beautiful lyrics I've ever heard in any song. "Come to me, run to me, do and be done with me..." "Everything I possess given in tenderness, wrapped in a ribbon of glass..." "Dying is easy, it's living that scared me to death," "Catch me and let me dive under 'cause I want to swim in the pools of your eyes." Get the video compilation, too. Again, some of the tracks might feel subdued, but, damn...just beautiful. "Money Can't Buy It," [might just tie "Cold" for best track] the video relies on Lennox in a beautiful dress with a twisted towel on her head, lounging in a beautiful Rococo room. I expected more because the song has some rises into awesome rock beltings of the chorus. No flash. Just her standing at that point...and it sends absolute CHILLS! There's a great rap in this song, simply filmed with her face pressed against the mirror, an insane and manic face eating every scary word, eyes wild, then soft, then wild again...everyone I know either screamed after that part or burst into laughter because it is so simple and intense and FUN!
This CD is a must have for any fan of Annie Lennox. Great Songs, Fantastic Sounds and non-stop Excellent tracks one after the other. Annie Lennox - Diva / A perfect choice!!!
Hey guys! You've gotta buy Annie Lennox's CD Diva. It rocks! The album title fits this fantastic, unique artist perfectly and there is no one else out there like her. She is the best!
This is Annie Lennox's solo debut and a terrific one at that. She sounds as soulful as ever and we hear that on this collection of power ballads. The hits include ''Why'', ''Walking on Broken Glass'', ''Legend in My Living Room'', ''Little Bird'', ''Primitive'' and ''Cold''. The album sounds sophisticated and classy, an effect produced by the lush arrangements. Annie Lennox's sultry and sexy vocals are the true centerpiece of this release and are enhanced by the music. Overall, this is a great purchase that would be an excellent addition to any music library.
