Dive into icy waters. A conversation with Margaret Atwood about literature, dystopias, and female identity
"In Canada, when you go swimming in the forests, the waters are terribly cold. The beginning of a book is similar. You wonder: Should I go in? No? Maybe? No? The only way to do it is to get a running start and dive in screaming. I get a running start and dive into my story screaming, because otherwise, I'll never get there." Margaret Atwood discusses with Haris Vlavianos how she writes, as well as ancient Greek mythology as a source of inspiration, the distinction between democracy and tyranny, politics in the age of image, and the possibility of Trump being re-elected in the USA. She talks, among other things, about writing as an act of optimism, the books that shaped her, and the "library of the future," contemporary feminism, and whether literature is threatened by artificial intelligence.
