Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This excellent book in the "Books for Young Learners" series won a Parent's Guide award for its story of a lifeguard who in his spare time explored the sea bottom for buried treasure. He finds not only cannon balls but also gold. It's a highly readable introduction to treasure diving and is keyed to Emergent, Early, or Fluent readers, a scale which spans K-2 readers. In addition, the key indicates supported (S), guided (G), or independent (I) for each of these stages. This one would work for the fluent end of the scale and, because of the high-interest subject matter, would appeal to older readers in fourth and fifth grade, as well. Natural word choice and kid-appealing pictures work closely to support new and young readers in practicing skills with an adult or independently. Photographs are colorful, close-up, the lifeguard is young, and the picture content provokes talk. Two interesting nonfiction notes explain the route of Spanish treasure ships on a western hemisphere map and more about the ship on which the diver discovered the treasure. 2000, Richard C Owen Publishers,
