Overview

Divorcing Dwayne is the first volume in a three-book series featuring Francine Harper and her no-good husband, Dwayne. As the series is set in rural Georgia, the authors calls the category "Grits-Lit."

As Divorcing Dwayne opens, Francine is in jail, facing felony assault charges for shooting at Dwayne and his stripper-lover, Carla, from the Peel 'n Squeal, a restaurant and local hangout. She had caught them together - in the very bed her daddy had carved and given to them at their wedding - and let go with both barrels. She hit the bed but missed Dwayne and Carla. In spite of her humiliation, in the course of the story Francine discovers strengths, divorces Dwayne, and regains her dignity via her trials (and court trial) and many errors along the way. Aided by her best friend, Ray Anne Pickles, Francine manages to run afoul of the law on several occasions, but in the end, she is vindicated.

    Laugh out loud funny, 'Grit-Lit'...

Laugh out loud funny, ¿Grit-Lit¿¿ Rarely does a book come along that will actually make me laugh out loud. This is a roll on the floor, tears running down the face, hilarious book! J.L. Miles has an incredible talent for taking a plausible situation and exaggerating it to the point of over-the-top fun. I loved the dialect. I could hear the Georgia twang (mixed with my Kentucky twang) as the characters spoke. This is the first in a new trilogy I can hardly wait to get my hands on book 2. I think I have a new favorite author, and her name is J.L. Miles!

    A must for women's groups

Francine Harper is having a really bad day. She's been arrested for trying to shoot her husband after she finds him in their bed with his ex-girlfriend. She's also pretty disappointed that she missed...three times. And so the story begins. 'Divorcing Dwayne' tells the story of Francine and Dwayne's relationship. As the story progresses, Francine also has to deal with issues regarding some trouble that Dwayne has gotten himself into with some shady characters. She experiences a myriad of feelings as she goes in and out of jail and as her divorce progresses. It is a funny, laugh out loud book, yet as a divorced woman, I found myself relating to a lot of what she was feeling - including her occasional desire to shoot the bastard, ummmh... I mean Dwayne. The story takes place in Georgia, where divorces only take 30 days to process. Ironically, having never been in Georgia before, I was headed out there from California to be with a niece that was going through a divorce. The humor in the book, especially about Georgia, really helped lighten my mood. The timing couldn't have been better. While my niece was chasing flys around her house with a fly swatter, I read that flys are the state bird in Georgia! Anyway, I highly recommend this novel. Women's reader groups will absolutely love it. Divorced women will relate, and anybody that just loves a good, fun story will soak it right up. I can't wait to get my hands on the next books in the series.

    Great book

Right up there with David Sedaris humor-wise, this book is second only to DEEP DISH. I love the pacing and humor and you can't beat this for a beach read.

    amusing regional tale

Francine Harper muses how she met Dwayne at a pig-pull and married him once but divorced him twice as she relaxes in the Hall County, Georgia jail. She was arrested for killing their bed given to them by her daddy. Actually she was jailed for trying to shoot Dwayne and Carla the Peel `n Squeal stripper, who were fiddling around in her bed, but her three shots missed them and murdered the bed instead.---------- Francine thinks nothing of her murdering the bed as little disturbs her since an alligator crashed her wedding except the love of her life cheating on her. However the county¿s District Attorney Warren Wilson plans to use criminal prosecutions of dangerous felons like Francine to get elected as the next governor. However, not one to sit idly by and be used by a political a-hole, Francine and her best friend Ray Anne Pickles conducts their own inquiries into the town of Pickville Springs, the Greenwich Village of North Georgia that is in between her courtroom trial.-------------- This amusing regional tale is a fun ¿grit-lit¿ story (per J.L. Miles) that readers will appreciate. Francine and Ray Anne go from the frying pan into the fire with each inquiry they make. The heroine¿s asides provide the audience a deep humorous look at Northern Georgia as her insight is fun to follow especially when Hollywood invades Pickville Springs. Zany and over the top of the still recognized southern end of the Appalachia trail that actually extends into Alabama, fans will enjoy the antics of Francine as she is DIVORCING DWAYNE again.------------ Harriet Klausner
