Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—This collection was compiled especially with beginning readers in mind. A large font and simple vocabulary help to support newly independent readers. For example, in Amy Ludwig VanDerwater's "Bathtime," "Clutching/rubber dino ducks/dinos bathe/in tubs like trucks/sharing soaps/like big suitcases/daily scrubbing/scaly faces." Other poets include Marilyn Singer, Joan Bransfield Graham, Douglas Florian, Rebecca Kai Dotlich, and a number of less familiar names. The formal dinosaur names create the biggest challenge, but a pronunciation guide is helpful. Colorful cartoon illustrations extend the humor and provide picture clues so that young paleontologists can recognize the creatures even if they can't read their names by sight. There are several comparable volumes of dinosaur poetry available, but this book will find favor not only in poetry sections but also on the beginning-reader shelves.—Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA
