Barnes & Noble - Brian Coleman
U.K.-based producer George Evelyn -- a.k.a. DJ Ease, the prime mover behind Nightmares on Wax -- is the musical tour guide for this installment in the lauded DJ Kicks mix series, and with a 60/40 division between smooth but edgy trip-hoppish instrumentals and straight-up hip-hop, he'll appeal to both dance-floor mavens and headphone-wearing headz. Strangely, Evelyn turns down the heat whenever things start to boil. In a club setting, that could get him lynched, but this is a studio-bred set meant for home use, so Ease gets a reprieve. Strangely, Evelyn turns down the heat whenever things start to boil. In a club setting, that could get him lynched, but this is a studio-bred set meant for home use, so Ease gets a reprieve. His selection is focused enough to give trip-hop fans the grooves and moods they crave and hip-hop acolytes the beats they need -- splashes of NYC's D.I.T.C. crew, Cali's Blackalicious, and Toronto's Saukrates, and even a retro juicing with A Tribe Called Quest's "Award Tour". The AV8/breakbeat subgenre is given a good showing with cuts like Kenny Dope's "Superkat" and Deckwrecka's "Catchwrecka," and the funk flows freely, with excellent melodies from lesser-known artists such as Martin Brew, Smokers Blend, Type, and Deadbeat. Like every DJ Kicks release in the series this is the 17th!, NoW's set is a groovy ride, offering both another side of an already established artist and an hour's worth of solid entertainment.
All Music Guide - John Bush
George Evelyn, one of the best production ears in trip-hop, came a bit late to the mix-album field his volume in the series had actually been planned since 1995, but definitely came correct anyway. DJ-Kicks spins through a raft of nu-school hip-hop Aim, Blackalicious, Freddy Fresh, Syrup, Type, classic old-school producers from A Tribe Called Quest "Award Tour" to Kenny Dope "Get on Down," "Superkat", and tosses in a few of his own NoW tracks to boot. Just as supremely chilled as the best Nightmares on Wax material.

    Great chill album

If you dig trip hop or hip-hop, this album has a great mix of both. If you like Rae and Christian or Kruder and Dorfmeister, check this one out!
