Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up-This illustrated history offers a stunning array of reproductions and photographs of the sites, people, and artifacts associated with the war. The book is divided into 29 two-page chapters covering such topics as the slavery debate, the election of 1860, raising armies, camp life, women during the war, Gettysburg, and the Confederacy surrender. A paragraph of text introduces each topic and informative, often lengthy, captions accompany the numerous black-and-white and full-color illustrations. This title will make an outstanding addition to collections of Civil War history and will draw visual learners. The many dramatic photos may inspire students to seek more in-depth material.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

EXCELLENT GUIDE TO THE CIVIL WAR!

This Eyewitness Guide is a must for classrooms and students interested in the Civil War. Filled with excellent pictures which make the book very interesting, this guide to the Civil War should be well-noted for its pictorial style. The author has put much effort into the writing, which tells a great deal about the battles, commanders, home front, and life during the Civil War. Although not much insight is given into some important battles, such as Antietam, the book is an excellent book for reluctant readers who wish to experience American History first hand! The book tells a great deal more than other nonfiction books, with detailed pages about Bull Run, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Sherman's March to the Sea, and Appomattox Court House. It also gives excellent insight into important leaders of the war, such as Lincoln, Davis, Lee, and Grant. This book is also excellent for those who need to write a school report about the Civil War or just wish to do some outside-of-school reading. When you want to know anything about everything, Eyewitness has it all!
