Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The well-known "Eyewitness" series offers nonfiction volumes centered on one subject. Each is spectacular in both photography and authentic, accurate information. Horse, one of the titles, is recommended for ages ten and up, but a younger reader will certainly enjoy the photographs and can glean some information. Other titles in the series include Costume, Film, and Boat.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-- Browsers will find this smorgasbord of equine facts fascinating. Each double-page spread contains a brief theme paragraph that describes the topic, along with captioned photos of horses, reproductions of the animal found in art and artifacts, and related equestrian gear. Subjects include history, anatomy, physiology, breeds, colors, and uses of horses, asses, mules, and zebras. In the hodgepodge of captions, a few errors surfaced: a spur is identified as a stirrup, a gelding described as a mare, a running martingale as a curb rein, a Kimberwicke bit as a bridoon, and a piaffe as a flying lead change. The British origin won't bother U. S. readers, as the information represents horses around the world. --Charlene Strickland, formerly at Albuquerque Public Library , NM

    Eyewitness Horse

My son used this book for a project he had to do in 3d grade. The book helped him to learn a lot about horses and the illustrations helped him to better understand what the book was about. The book comes with a CD which has mostly pictures. I think more could've been done with the CD, i.e. include some games or other activities to correspond with the material in the book to help reinforce what was covered in the book. Overall, it was a great book to use as a tool to learn about horses.

    I Also Recommend:

    Horses, this [sucks]

This book is informative if you wanted to know more about horses in the past. It had no necessary information about horses and everyone else thought it would be more about care, not history, and the photo of the cowboy on the palomino on page 57 is a fake photogaph taken at a studio, because the guy on the palomino horse doesn't even know how to throw his rope, because it's very dangerous when all of your rope coils are on the saddle horn because you can definitely get in a bad wreck, if your horse is to start bucking or get spooked. This book was definitely boring and I would not recommend buying this book.

I would not buy this book, because this is not the right book for any horseman's library, this book will definitely be forgotten, YUK! This one is not my favorite book, just - - - don't bother - not even as good as 3rd rate - - - Not worth any price that is low. Save your money and buy something else ... anything else like a different horse book or a rodeo or cowboy book or a western film! A picture posed by a guy that's not a calf roper on page 57 in a chapter called "The horse in North America" is just a phony and just looks fake since the guy does not know how to hold his rope. Certainly not the book you would never want to buy, DON'T GET THIS BOOK, because I would never buy this book again, never, and I would definitely recommend not buying this book.

The only top best two horse books that you would probably only ever need are just "Horses" by K. M. Peyton and "Encyclopedia of the Horse" by editor Elizabeth Peplow, as now really, horse lovers just only need two books as for anyone interested in horses or ponies--whether you own one or not--"Horses" by K. M. Peyton and "Encyclopedia of the Horse" by editor Elizabeth Peplow are both the only books you'll ever need! Really, believe me,"Horses" by K. M. Peyton and "Encyclopedia of the Horse" by editor Elizabeth Peplow are really the real much better books than "Horse (DK Eyewitness Books)" by Juliet Clutton-Brock. "Horses" by K. M. Peyton and "Encyclopedia of the Horse" by editor Elizabeth Peplow are the only top real ones that you would really want to only plan on getting, than this one, right here, because this one sucks! YUK!
