DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Florida

Overview

Florida can be divided into seven distinct regions, each corresponding to specific geographic and cultural criteria. Marshy Everglades, and tropical Keys occupy the south, while the vacation capital of Miami rises along the east coast. From the extravagant Gilded Age of manses and fantastic beaches of the Gold and Treasure Coasts to the amusement parks of Orlando, and St. Augustine's Spanish-Colonial era architecture in the Northeast, Florida is a region of stark contrasts. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It can be difficult to find an engaging reference book, but World Almanac has succeeded in creating a series that will educate and entertain readers. The books are entirely in Spanish and contain sidebars and graphics that hold interest throughout more academic descriptions of state history and economy. For example, Chui explains the invention of Gatorade athletic drink at the University of Florida only a page before delving into the history and development of Florida from Native American territory to modern state. The history is well explained and accompanied by primary documents such as an etching of Juan Ponce de Léon looking for the fountain of youth. In a similar vein, the authors include a list, with brief biographies, of famous Floridians such as Janet Reno, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jim Morrison, The section about Floridian culture focuses on beaches, sporting events and amusement parks. However, Chui also describes the state's unique wildlife and lakes. Other features of the World Almanac states series include: a timeline comparing state history to national history, a discussion of state geography and climate, and a description of state government. This book is most useful for Spanish speakers, as the content might be too basic high school students learning Spanish. 2004, World Almanac Library, Ages 8 to 12.

    Not Helpful

Very little information on any one city or area. Not at all helpful to tourists. Not up to the usual DK guidebook style.
