Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
The exploits of famous adventurers are recounted in this collection. There are thirty vignettes of which ten percent include women. The assemblage is a strange one because it includes heroes and villains. Readers rove the high seas with Leif Erikkson, Columbus, and Blackbeard and soar into space with Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Two or four pages of text, liberally filled with illustrations tell the story of each adventurer. A shaded box gives a summary of the adventure or the event up to the point where Platt begins his retelling. To illustrate, Thor Heyerdahl believed that the Pacific Islanders were descendants of South American peoples. He built a raft of balsa wood and set out to prove his theory. After three months at sea, he and his crew crash landed on a coral island proving that such trips could have been made by early seafarers. 1999, DK Publishing, Ages 10 up, $15.95.
