Editorial Reviews

Good pictures highlight this easy-to-read story about a dormouse. Her search for a winter bed is a good illustration of how and why animals hibernate. My eight-year-old son said, "My little brother will enjoy reading it." The picture wordlist is very helpful for early readers. Part of the "Dorling Kindersley Readers" series. 2000, DK Publishing, Inc., $12.95. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
Children's Literature
Doormouse is looking for a place to spend the winter. She is one of several animals that hibernate during the cold freezing months. As she hunts for the perfect place, she passes many animal homes, including a squirrel's nest, a bear's den and a bat's cave. Along the way, she manages to evade two dangerous predators—an owl and a snake. Heart pounding from her close call, Doormouse finds a warm, dry hole in a tree as her new winter home. Full-color photographs of all of the animals make this early reader an educational adventure. Picture dictionary boxes, word repetition and limited vocabulary make this a level 1 reader, but it never has that feel and does not talk down to kids. A good choice for introductory programs about weather, the seasons and hibernating animals. Part of the "Dorling Kindersley Reader" series, this book also contains a note to parents. 2000, DK Publishing, . Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-Suspense builds as children follow a dormouse searching for a winter home. She observes squirrels, wasps, toads, etc., readying their homes, and escapes from an owl and a snake, finally finding the perfect spot in a tree. The text features repetition, limited vocabulary, short sentences, and large typeface. While earliest beginning readers may stumble over words like "meadow," "burrow," and "stump," this book is easier than Henrietta Bancroft and Richard G. Van Gelder's Animals in Winter (HarperCollins, 1996). Large, colorful photos of the animals are accompanied by small, labeled photos of their homes. A successful beginning science book.-Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
