Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The introductory section entitled Learning Map Skills is a brief but clear introduction to the techniques employed in mapmaking along with examples of different types of projections and the result. Historical techniques are contrasted with mapmaking today which has yielded maps with incredible detail due to satellite data and computer technology. A good lesson in scale and map reading and basic information about using the atlas will stand kids in good stead. The atlas looks at the world as a whole and then the continents and regions within each. The text provides information about industry and land use, population, environmental issues, climate and the landscape. Small but sharp photographs give a glimpse into the region and while the pages are full of information, it is accessible and the maps are easy to read. There is a glossary, extensive index and reproduction of nearly 200 country flags on the endpapers. An inexpensive an useful atlas for home, school or office.
School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-This atlas is distinguished by its attractive graphics. For reference use, however, it is inferior to most of the other tools for this audience, especially Goode's World Atlas 19th Edition (Rand McNally, 1996). The main drawbacks are its limited detail (the DK Student Atlas indexes about 10,000 places as compared to over 30,000 in Goode's) and the small size of the maps.-SD
