Overview

PSYCHOLOGY / MYSTICISM

“Highly readable, intriguing, provocative. . . . [An] intellectually courageous book. . . . Will be of great use both to researchers and clinicians, as well as to laypeople.”
--American Journal of Psychiatry, 2002

“Rick Strassman’s pioneering research raises fascinating questions about the neurochemical basis of experience and the feasibility of conducting human research with mind- altering drugs in a university medical center. Truly adventurous reading!”
--Andrew Weil, author of Spontaneous Healing

“Fascinating and provocative. A remarkable exploration of the boundaries of science and consciousness itself.”
--Rupert Sheldrake, author of The Presence of the Past

“A dazzling journey through psychedelic drug experimentation and a tantalizing peek into a new model of how the brain and mind work. Strassman’s research points toward a physiological basis for spirit and its interaction with the human body; his data suggests that our brain chemistry allows us access to other realms of existence just when we need it most, and his story recounts both the dangers and promises of entering this brave new world.”
--Bruce Greyson, Editor, Journal of Near-Death Studies

From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted DEA-approved clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected sixty volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical that is also manufactured by the human brain, consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many volunteers reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, especially “aliens.” Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives.

Strassman’s research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by René Descartes to be the seat of the soul. DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul’s movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that alien abduction experiences are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

RICK STRASSMAN, M.D., is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

Editorial Reviews

Book Reader
This is probably the most thorough book on the psychedelic, DMT-its history, chemistry, uses (legal and illegal, and its effects. This is a very compelling, thoughtful book, written by a scrupulous scientist with the soul of a meditator...
Fortean Times
What you will find is a thoughtful, well-written report about another of life's mysteries.
Trip
Strassman's research was an important step, one that will potentially illuminate the path for future researchers and volunteers alike, and this book is a great contribution to the ongoing dialogue surrounding psychedelics.

    Inspiring!

I found the Book to be a profound and daring piece of work; a must-read for all researchers in the field of pshychoactivity, whether in a scientific approach or not. Which is good about the research of Dr Strassman is that it leaves so many questions at the end of the book; it opens up a new window in the psychoactivity research field, with so much work to be done. A true pioneer's work.

    EVERYONE MUST READ THIS BOOK!

This is an excellent book, by an author who is not afraid to give evidence which contradicts his ideas! He provides both sides of the story in an attemt to provide an unbiased account of his studies -- and the result is a fascinating book which will change your ideas on how the mind may function at times such as birth, death, and mystical experiences (it changed mine). Dr. Strassman needs more funding to do even more of these studies. I am telling everyone I know to read this book.

    Loved this book!

While this is not really a mass market kind of book...it is the type I prefer. In great detail, it sets forth the underlying information used to reach its various conclusions...allowing the readers to reach their own. I was most interested in the connection between the parallel between the time of development of the pineal gland and the reports by Buddists that the soul comes to inhabit the body 45 days after conception. While the research found in this book could support the a conclusion that mystical experiences are merely biochemical reactions...it could equally support a conclusion that we have found the biochemical link between the spirit world and the body, namely the pineal gland. It may be the equivalent of a spiritual radio receiver. Isn't the mind a wonderful thing! Look forward to more research results. I nope restrictions and money for this work loosen up.

So facinating I couldn't put it down...

This is one of the best books I've read in a while, and by far probably one of the best non-fiction books I've ever read. The author presents a place where science and spirituality finally meet face to face. The history of psychedelics that Dr. Strassman recounts creates a framework in which his work can be examined and analyzed in a proper context.

    Absolutely fascinating!!! I loved it.

    DMT THE SPIRIT MOLECULE

A compelling and harrowing account into the alien abduction experience, spirituality and schizophrenia. A must read for anyone that wants to know more about how the mind ticks, and the role that DMT plays in our lives.

    Highly recommended.

I read this about 10 years ago and went back and read it again recently. Anyone interested in the chemistry of the brain and/or mystical/spiritual experiences should find this book to be fastinating.

    my thoughts

I havent read this book yet but im sure its gonna be awesome because i have my own theories on D.M.T and thats when we die the dmt is released into our body and causes a transfer from 1 plane of existance to another but its not death because whatever you believe in when you die wether your religious or not thats what happens to you the dream world is not diffrent from reality because its just two diffrent lives being lived thats why people have dejavu because you have already done it just not in this dimension and if your transfer is blocked or stopped somehow in its process depending how you die plays a big role but thats how ghost can be explained if you dont die natrually you become stuck inbetween two plains of existance and dont transfer all the way or if you are just not ready and never will be explaining ghost
