Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
Genetic genealogy can allow us to trace our long-lost relatives, or understand history, such as the origins of certain halplogroups, i.e. the descendants of a single individual who first had a certain genetic mutation. By using ancestry genetics, researchers discovered that ancestors of Native Americans lived in northern Mongolia and that the first inhabitants of Australia came from Southeast Asia. Other concepts explained are DNA, DNA testing, mitochondria, and genetic mutations. Ollhoff makes it clear that DNA can be used to do more than solve crimes. Large color pictures make the text and scientific concepts easy to understand. History buffs will appreciate the chapter entitled Famous DNA Discoveries, such as solving the mystery of where Christopher Columbus was buried. Still, while there is nothing inaccurate presented in the book, it's a bit too thin on information to justify the cover price for a classroom or library. Teachers would be better served by a more comprehensive text. It is part of a series, "Your Family Tree," from ABDO & Daughters. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman
